I'm sure there's some proportion that "age out" for lack of a better word. Like, I really enjoyed a couple of fandoms when I was in college, but the first year out of school was just a killer on me at work, and I was too tired to care. Then I went to grad school while working full time, then I had two jobs. Now that I have just one job, and I'm well settled in it, fandom is fun again. One of my friends had the same experience - it was fun in HS and college, grad school was brutal, and once she got settled in her new job, she started dabbling her toes in the waters again.

All the high-production fandoms I've been in seem to have a younger fan base, and the low-traffic fandoms seem to skew a little older. Although, that could just be me being curmudgeonly...
