I think Toy Story Ken worked well given the role he had in the story - part of the bad guy's inner circle. Making him a bit self-hating and in denial about being basically one of Barbie's accessories fits that role.

A thoroughly nice and perfect Ken wouldn't have worked at all for a villainous character, even one who eventually turned on the big bad and became a good guy.

And I guess the entire "feminine men are pathetic" thing was part of making him a bad guy then?
I thought it was stupid of Pixar to showcase how it should be shameful for "manly" men to be compared to women. They could have made him an antagonist without insulting all the little girls in the audience.

I didn't see him as pathetic because he was 'feminine', I saw him as pathetic because he was so frivolous. Why is frivolity strictly a female thing?

I guarantee you that no little girl in the audience was thinking "I'm insulted that they're making fun of Ken for liking feminine things!" It's only oversensitive college-aged feminists who do that.

No, of course no little girl thinks that actively. They just absorb the notion that typically feminine things are fine for girls but stupid for boys to do. You don't need to be oversensitive to figure out where the "you are a pussy", "grow some balls" and "you cry like a woman" insults stem from.

You've got it wrong. The only reason why he was saying, "I am not a girl's toy" was because the other bad guys were giving him grief. The moment the bad guys were gone and he paired up with Barbie, he happily embraced who he was because everyone else allowed him to be who he was deep down. He had been hiding it the whole time. Which is why he told Barbie that no one in the daycare appreciated clothing. He wanted to find people who were like him. But no one wants to be made fun of who they are.

And why exactly is "you're a girls toy" an insult? Why do those male characters think badly of girl toys? That's the question and we all know the answer ;)

Because, like I said, the bad guys made it an insult. After they were gone, it because an insult no more.

I agree with this so much. Toy Story 3 Ken worked so well since he was completely insecure with himself. The different environment and themes of the film worked for what he was dealing with.
