I've never seen any 'it's totally canon' behaviour from D/H shippers myself, or the Harry hatred you describe - but then again, I haven't even been in the periphery of the fandom for years now. But the ridiculous fanon characterisation that goes with the ship is actually super endearing to me, especially since Draco's character is unbearable otherwise.

There are the "it's totally canon" and "we hate Ginny" types (sometimes the same group, sometimes different), but they mostly come out of the woodworks when they get defensive about it. Which I don't think has been for a while, but I don't pay attention to HP wank anymore.

Oooh, I completely forgot about the intense Ginny haters. I can remember see a lot of Cho hate as well for a few years. Lol, good times.

I suppose you can probably do something with the fact that Harry spends all of HBP talking about Draco, and following Draco, and wondering what Draco's up to. Harry being obliviously gay for Draco is so much more entertaining to me than any of the actual plot of that book.

Harry and Draco are definitely kind of obsessed with each other at different points of the book, that is true ;) But that doesn't stop Draco essentially being a weak, racist git. :( Which is why I like fics where they meet several years later as adults and Draco has changed/redeemed himself, and Harry has to come to terms with the fact that Draco is a different person than he was at school. A lot more interesting than Leatherpants!Draco fo sho.
