I actually think Harry/Draco started out being the HP equivalent of Spuffy (for some shippers), even though I've always thought Draco was more like Andrew or Jonathan (minus the nerd factor) than Spike. Fandom Draco, however, is often written like Spike.

I'd be careful though because just as many people ship H/D knowing it's not canon, and also that Spike /=/ Draco.

Good point about Draco being like Andrew or Jonathan - they loved playing at being "bad boys", but when it came down to it, they weren't murderers (yes, Andrew killed Jonathan, but he wouldn't have done so without the First Evil talking him into it). Nor were they all that badass, really (which of course was part of their charm).

Spike on the other hand was a killer. He also had a trace of humanity left, but even post-resouling he wasn't a cuddly thing - if he had been, he would have given Robin Wood his (Wood's) mother's coat for starters.

Huh I think that "Andrew or Jonathan, not Spike" is actually a great summary of my favourite Draco characterisation. Earlier on in the series, when I was in fandom, Draco as kind of a nerdy failboat was actually a common thing. At minimum it was noted that he cared more about school than Harry (admittedly not hard to do).
