(Anonymous) 2013-04-02 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)There are plenty of male characters (like Mickey from Doctor Who, and Raoul from Phantom of the Opera, and Kevin from Criminal Minds, and Ron from Harry Potter, etc) who I simply cannot love because they get in the way.
Nothing wrong with that at all.
......
Um, yes, there is something fucking wrong with that. I cannot begin to summarize everything that is wrong with that. And no, it is not "not much different". It is COMPLETELY different so as to not be even in the same universe.
The characters are not you, this is not your life, and "simply not being able to love" a character...because they are part of a story that involves two characters - WHO ARE NOT YOU - who you ship and they happen to "get in the way" of your ship? Seriously?
Do you watch for the story at all? Do you not care about the character dynamics or the depiction of people being believable people having believable interactions? Do you seriously think it's remotely sane or logical to be incapable of appreciating characters who add something to the story and who have a function in the story that adds to the overall meaning of the story and to the development of the plot, themes, other characters' development, if they get in the way of a couple you ship? Is your entire appreciation of the show based on "If X helps get my ship together, X= good, and if X stops my ship from getting together, X = bad"?
That couple is not you. I just...wow. Just wow. I cannot wrap my mind around people actually thinking this is an okay or logical way of thinking about a fictional story. I can understand rooting against a character who is blocking your ship, or disliking them because they are irritating or they are reducing the quality of a storyline, but disliking them simply because they block a ship...that does not involve you? WHAT. Just....just wat. How do people possibly consume fiction in this manner? How?
