JFTR I haven't actually watched this anime, but I don't think the "uncanny valley" concept really can apply to Kyubey...?

Yeah, uncanny valley is used to describe something that is just realistic enough to make us notice how fake it looks--that there's something indefinably 'off' about the thing that's trying very hard to look real but missing something fundamental.

Kyubey isn't trying to look realistic at all, so he's just straight up creepy if you find him so.

I wouldn't use "uncanny valley," either, but I can see what they mean - Kyubey does give off a "not quite right" vibe, but not in a "can't put my finger on it" way, which is sort of what I consider "uncanny valley" to be. That said, his major creepy factor comes from him being completely alien. His appearance definitely enhances the effect, but he'd still be a furry ball of WTF even if he didn't have the immobile face and everything else.

Correct. Kyubei is creepy, but he doesn't look nearly similar enough to any existing creature for the Uncanny Valley effect to apply.

This didn't seem creepy in the least, so I did an image search on "kyubey" as mentioned in the first comment.

It gets worse if you watch the show. So much worse.

I saw the whole show several times, and Kyubei is still not creepy to me.

Seriously, the only thing 'creepy' is that his mouth doesn't move. Other than that he's just doing his job.

The whole series is just preaching the 'buyer beware' lesson. Something that seems too good to be true, probably is. Kyubei can't make them sign a contract and he seems pretty open with the information.

The only tragedy is that the ideal energy is the misfortune of young girls who are naive. Though Kyubei doesn't understand human emotion, so he doesn't come off as creepy. If he DID understand human emotion and was doing this all for the lulz (and not for the bigger picture) than yeah he would be creepy.

Kyubey is so creepy. While watching the show, I just got more and more creeped out as he continued to talk to the girls. That anime played with my mind.

TBH, I never thought Kyubei looked creepy, and still don't. He is creepy, but that's a different matter. I may be the only person on the planet to feel this way.

Have you seen the manga, anon? He starts out with normalish eyes in it, and then after a certain event, they start drawing them CREEEPY! Actually gave me the creeping shivers!

I never thought he was that creepy. I can't see him as anything other than cute.

He's not even evil, imo. He's trying to keep the universe going and doesn't understand human emotions. Though he answers questions if they are asked.

*shrug* That's how I see it. I mean, yeah the girls got screwed over but it wasn't out of Kyuubi's maliciousness/evil plans he was working for the bigger picture which is collecting energy to keep existence existing... or something along those lines.

That's why I don't see why Kyuubi is scary enough to warrant 'uncanny valley' label.

I gotta say, I think it was genius that he wasn't evil. That would have been an easy way to go, but they didn't go there. They just made him so completely alien. That is creepy in its own way, but it's not the same way an evil character is creepy.

I actually loved Kyuubey by the end of the series. What a great character.

Lesson I learned tonight: Don't ever do a Google search for the term "creepy Kyubey" again. Just...don't do that.

After I watched the show not long ago, I wanted a plush Kyubey.
He sure is a neat little alien creature thing.
