Re: Random shit that you feel like ranting about

A long time ago my dad had a book with an interesting cover that drew my attention. It was an old paperback that looked like the pulp fiction novels and it had a drawing of an airplane flying over storm clouds at night. It sat on the little table next to his spot on the couch for a long time and I finally decided to read it. I wound up loving it and asked him if I could keep it, but it turned out he'd borrowed it from someone at work and had returned it. I never wrote down the name or author and have never been able to find it since. I so badly want to find that book and over the years it's become about finding it just for the sake of finding it, just because I haven't been able to.

They haven't let me down yet.

Thanks so much! I'm going through the tags to see if someone has looked for this before. Stranger things have happened. If no one has, I'll make an LJ account and post an entry.

Do you remember anything about the plot?

It's been so long since I've thought about the plot that I tend to think of it in terms of a search query. I'm going through old entries at the recommended LJ comm and if no one has posted about it before, I will take some time to think about what the story actually was and post an entry there about it.

Have you tried posting to http://whatwasthatbook.livejournal.com/ about it? They do better with plot description than cover pics, but it's certainly worth a shot. Good luck!

Thank you! You're not as late to the party as I am since I'd never heard of it :) I will post there if no one has posted about it before. The anon above you reminded me that I haven't thought about the actual plot in years, so I need to take some time to think about it. I'm pretty sure I remember enough details to post more than just a description of the cover.

That sounds like one of the covers for The Shepherd (http://www.amazon.com/The-Shepherd-Frederick-Forsyth/dp/0670639699/) by Frederick Forsyth. The wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shepherd) for the book has a better description.

That's it!

I can't believe you were able to identify that based on my vague description! I have been looking for this book for over 20 years. I can't thank you enough!! There are a lot of different editions and I'm going to try to buy the one my dad had all those years ago, but even if I get a different one I will be happy :) Thank you so much!!

This thread is amazing. You guys are all amazing. Here, have a pretty picture of the Cat's Eye Nebula (click the image for a larger version):

That is very cool. And oddly fitting for this thread :)

Also, thanks for including the wiki link because I had never heard of this before. I suspect I should be ashamed of that but TBH there are many more commonly known things that I'm oblivious of and I only have so much shame to go around.
