As someone who is beyond sick of Moffat and found series 7A completely pointless, I actually enjoyed The Bells of St. John and I'm cautiously optimistic for the rest of the new episodes.

What did you like about it? (Sorry if I sound bitchy; I was just so excited to be scared of monsters in the wifi that when the episode actually aired, it couldn't live up to the hype so I pretty much absolutely hated it.)

Well, I mostly just enjoyed JLC as Clara. lol. I think she's really likable and I'm looking forward to spending more time with her.

I'm glad that Moffat's not writing anymore episodes until the finale (I think) and I'm jazzed about Neil Gaiman. The non-Moffat episodes in this era are sometimes really really good.

Didn't care for The Bells of St. John, but I didn't hate it either. I was mostly just bored. It seemed kind of...bland. So I guess exactly what you were afraid of.

Yeah, it wasn't anything special, plotwise. But I did really enjoy JLC as Clara.

Wait, really? Oh. Maybe this series won't be as disappointing as I was expecting... I'm trying not to get into the hype about the Gaiman episode, though, but it is an exciting prospect. =)

It was pretty bland to me too, yeah. I console myself with thinking that at least Clara had already been introduced.

Exactly. I spent half the episode mindlessly browsing tumblr because I didn't care enough about the episode to give it my full attention.

Moffat's not writing anymore episodes until the finale

Whoa, really? Where is this from? I mean, Moffat's written 6 episodes of season 5, 5 episodes of season 6, and...does this year's Christmas special count as an episode? If not, he's written only three episodes so far of season 7...

I hear the Ice Warriors are returning though. I don't go out looking for info on what's gonna happen in shows I watch so I don't know any more, but I'm excited about that.

I went in expecting it to be as bad as 7x01, and found myself actually enjoying some of it. (I mean, it was kind of a rip-off of "The Idiot's Lantern," but at least it didn't make me angry? That's a harsh condolence.)

[personal profile] sagelazarus 2013-04-05 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think the fact that it was so similar to The Idiot's Lanter is part of the gigantic, sweeping allusions to Rose. I'm fond of searching them out in the episodes now. It's like a great big seek-and-find.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was as boring and unforgettable as most of the Moffat Era episodes, but the things that were memorable are things I'd rather not remember, TBH.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
People with an attitude like that are the reason I'm not really treading into DW fandom anymore. I like what I've been seeing, and there's just an overwhelming mass of negativity that ruins the show for me.

Like, yeah, there's some problems, but the overall enjoyment is still there.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Even as someone who shares the OP's attitude, I think you've got a good idea going on there :)

I just complain a lot because it BOTHERS me and I don't especially want to force myself to not say anything to my fandom friends when I'm bursting to and when I have so many arguments about my dislike, and I can't help start predicting bad stuff once I've been burned one too many times (not to mention, having low expectations and being pleasantly surprised is way better than having high expectations that get dashed). I never do it to actively ruin someone else's enjoyment. Never ever ever tag my hate, etc.

Actually, rule of thumb: unless you really, really, really want to be involved in the fandom of a show you like and feel like you're restless or unsatisfied with watching without a fandom, stay away from it and just watch the show on your own. It's usually better that way.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
yes. non fandom for this reason, even though I love the doctor. every doctor.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda enjoyed it on first viewing, but looking back, it's probably not something I'd care about enough to rewatch, and rewatch value is one of the most important things to me. So basically: "ehhh...." Nothing great, but nothing ruinous that the next episodes will have to make up for either. And I don't think the next episode is going to be written by Moffat, am I right?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the last episode and I like Clara so far, but I am not letting myself completely get into it because I am just waiting for Moffat to mess it up.

He already made her a SUPER SPECIAL MYSTERY so I know he cares about her more as a plot point then as a character, so it's better for me to not get attached.

I was watching a rerun of Sarah Jane adventures where 10 shows up and I almost started crying mourning the loss of when I cared of the Doctor and his companions that much.

Isn't that pretty much true of how he treats every character?

OMG coincidence I just finished watched the Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith for the eighth time or so last night! Still get the biggest kick out of Ten fangirling over how BRILLIANT all of his Sarah's little friends are.

But tbf, Death of the Doctor was fifty kinds of brilliant too, what with RTD's Jo Grant adoration/general companion feels slathered all over it. That scene where Eleven is just "bwuh???" when Jo asks him if Three thought she was stupid. <3 I wish there were more scenes like that in DW.

This - I downloaded all of Nine and Ten's adventures to rewatch, but I still cannot bring myself to watch Ms. Amy "Tee hee aren't I sexy oh look I can slap you and say I'm Scottish so it's okay and snog the Doctor while treating Rory like he's disposable" Pond's episodes. Loving JLC, though - and I think I'm actually finally warming up to 11!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering about season 8. Is Moffat going to be doing that? Is Matt? Is Jenna-Louise? Or is she gonna be finished in the s7 finale? Is Eleven gonna regenerate whenever Moffat leaves, like Ten and RTD? No one seems to be thinking beyond the 50th Anniversary Special. I assume Moffat's doing the special, but I haven't heard word on when/whether any members of the cast and crew is slated to change.

I think JLC has been confirmed as returning for series 8. Idk about Matt though.

Yeah... I get the impression that all of Moffat's dangling plot threads (what made the TARDIS explode, who the fuck are trying to build their own TARDIS and why and how, wtf Silence, the Fields of Trenzalore) are one big long game leading up to the 50th. I also kinda think he's trying to clean house after RTD broke the Doctor and didn't put him back together again, and giving the Lonely God/Woobie Destroyer of Worlds stuff a good sendoff before he kills it dead. And... I honestly don't know what he'll do with himself afterwards. Presumably he's trying to leave the house in good shape for his successor, but no idea whether he'll stick around to enjoy it himself.

I do hope Matt Smith stays on after Moffat leaves though. He at least seems to be showing no signs of burning out, and I'd love to see what a different showrunner would do with Eleven.

It really felt like a Torchwood episode.

Well, excluding that Jack wasn't having sex with the wifi, but!

It really felt like a Torchwood episode.

Oh my god, you're right! Something felt weird about it but I couldn't think of any big problems or changes with it so I didn't know what it was, but...you're kinda right.
