Fainting

[personal profile] illiadandoddity 2013-04-04 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever fainted? Like full-on all of a sudden your body just forgets how consciousness works fainting?

I had it happen to me this morning. I was just there talking to my mom, and suddenly my vision started to go dim, and I couldn't keep my balance and started just staggering trying not to fall over. I fell into mom, who caught me and helped me over to the couch, and I sat there for a few minutes before the sweating and the ringing in my ears went away. Ten minutes later I was totally fine, like it had never happened. Still have no idea what caused it. I don't think it was hunger or tiredness, I'm not sick, and I'm definitely not pregnant...

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

It happened to me recently, after giving a blood sample for a study. What you experienced sounds like what happened to me, though I was stupid enough to try walking to a bathroom and ending up falling over.
What happened to me was Vasovagal Syncope or Vasovagal Response, and it's like when the wires in your brain get crossed and you blood pressure drops like crazy. If you're sitting down, you might not lose consciousness. I looked into it a lot because it freaked me out so much that my body could just do that for no reason. Ugh.

Earlier this year I was eating so little that I would go to the gym and black out for a bit afterwards.
One day I ran a few miles and when I was in the shower I blacked out for half a minute or so. I was standing and swaying on my feet and my eyes were open but I couldn't see anything.

i've dealt with fainting spells for a good portion of my life, almost always brought on by being under-hydrated or having low blood sugar/pressure, and occasionally by overheating. same thing happens as what you described, and only lasts like a minute at most before i come to again.

strangely enough, it almost always happens in a bathroom.

I have chronic low blood pressure so get light-headed a lot and have to bend over for awhile after standing up on a regular basis, or that starts happening... But because I know of that and how to fix it, I've never actually fainted. Closest I came was once when I was getting blood drawn for some labwork and not only was I dehydrated, but they had a new person doing it and they blew a vein in one of my arms. So the experienced tech tried in my other arm, and I closed my eyes, and suddenly she goes "Whoa. Uh, okay, take some deep breaths" and I had no idea why she sounded alarmed, so I opened my eyes and everything looked like a staticy television set. Oops. Took me about half an hour to feel normal enough again that I could drive myself home from the lab. :P

A couple of times, the one I remember most was in the ER, it sure as hell got the attention of the Nurse.

When it happened I didn't have time to react or anything I blacked out and woke up on the floor with my lip bleeding. It was from going about 48 hours without sleep though so, that was probably the cause.

I get dizzy a lot though (especially when I shower or when I get up if I lie flat on my back or stomach), and if I don't sit down or lean on something I faint. Never really thought about when or why it happens, it is just a part of my body that malfunctions once in a while.

I had felt fine after I donated blood last year, went on with my evening until later that night when I woke up feeling ill. I ran to the bathroom and my vision was going in and out. When I was walking back to my room, I was just a few steps from my bed when my vision blacked out, and I dropped to the floor, taking my small shelf next to my bed with me. After a few seconds I came back and dropped myself on my bed. Got a cute on my leg and a small piece of my shelf came off.

When I was younger, I would pass out from dehydration, but they were full-on, blackout, piss-my-pants fainting.

More recently (as in a few years ago), I ended up passing out from what I think might've been possible anemia due to poor diet. (I definitely wasn't eating well, and nothing like this has happened since I started paying better attention to what I'm putting in my body.) I was standing up, but I felt dizzy and my vision was starting to go black, so I sat down (since that's what I was taught to do as a kid from the aforementioned fainting spells), but I ended up blacking out anyway - fell out of the chair and smacked into tile floor head-first. Ended up with a golf-ball-sized lump on my forehead and calling out of work sick that day.

A few years before that, I passed out when giving blood for testing for anemia - which my mom thought I had when in reality, the blood test showed that my lethargy and general crappy feeling was because I had a mild case of mono. I do seem to be prone to anemia, though, but that particular time was most likely because I was still recovering from being sick.

YES. TWICE. and like you, i never found out why. although it's probably worth getting a blood test to make sure you're not anemic.

the last time was when i was walking back to a friend's place. i started to fall over, then everything turned green and i couldn't hear. i made it to her staircase after i could see again, then faceplanted and passed out for (according to her) 5 minutes. i thought i was going to die but then i woke up and had some ice cream.

Twice in the last year but I'm always in the best of company when I do it. First was at a fundraiser for ambulance staff and paramedics, so pretty swift response and they gave me oxygen, which was nice of them considering I accidentally knocked down a guy filming something. The second was when I was on work experience at a hospital, where I fainted towards one of the doctors and it apparently looked like I was going in for a hug, lmao.
Both my times were to do with heat and crowding though, so I'm not really sure what yours was. I'd suggest going to your GP to get it checked out.

That's happened to me a number of times. The first was in a foreign country when I was 11 and hadn't eaten enough the night before because I didn't like any of the food. Most of the times after that were when my period was super heavy. Since I got on the pill it hasn't happened much. But each time it was completely no fun whatsoever. My sympathies :\

yep it's happened to me a couple times almost exactly like that. both times were right in the morning not long after i got up. one time i got up to get something to drink during that feeling and i ended up actually losing consciousness and woke up on the floor in the kitchen

Twice. Both times during the same year on the first day of my period when I'd been standing for a couple of hours straight. I've gotten kind of lightheaded and shaky under similar circumstances since, but never to that degree. I sat down for a while and drank some water afterwards, and was basically fine. But it was pretty upsetting. :(

I'd also recommend you go to the doctor same as the anon did, OP. This sounds similar to a Cardiogenic Syncope attack thing I had last year after having a blood test - sudden, dramatic drop in blood pressure, feeling dizzy, falling to the ground, apparently going a washed-out grey colour, appearing to have a seizure (which scared the hell out of my mum, who was taking the blood, because I actually have epilepsy o.O).

The doctor said I was fine after checking me out, but she was at least able to explain what happened and now I know more about it in case I have to have another blood test in future (well, I do, since I never technically completed that one, but :S). If you're able to, it might be best you go.

Good luck.

I fainted once a few minutes after getting a shot. My vision went green and static-y, and the next thing I knew, I was on the floor and my head hurt. I was only out for a moment, but apparently in that moment I hit my head on a sink.

I haven't gotten a shot since. :/

Yup, one time when i was a teen. I had a bug bite on my *foot*, and i'm allergic so it was kinda swollen up and such (but i'm not that allergic, i just get a big hive and it itches for way longer than anyone else's bite itches).

I was lifting my foot up to look at it and just...dark, wham, nothing. Weirdest thing ever. Never happened again.

Re: Fainting

Yeah, but to be fair, it was after I'd lost a bunch of blood. The good part? I was already in a hospital - my mom was checking me on, and I was leaning on the counter next to her... next thing I knew she and a nurse and a couple of other people were holding me inches from the floor.

Needless to say I spent the rest of my waiting room time on a gurney...

I've fainted three times, twice when I was in the military. And I mean, total black out, no idea how long I was out unconsciousness.

The first time in my teens, I was sitting at my desk and I fell over, knocked my head into the corner and woke up on the floor.

One time in the military I was in formation and they all thought I "locked my knees", but then I fainted two more times after I came to in a 10 minute period. The last time I woke up when I was in the ER already.

But still, they have no idea what caused it. I have no idea if I have some illness or if it's random weirdness.

I've only had one full-blown non-injury-induced fainting spell, which is a little surprising considering my health history. It was right out of the fucking blue, too. I leaned over to pet my dog and the next thing I knew I was picking myself up out of her water bowl. I think it was caused by the Ambien I'd taken a few minutes before, but as I'd never had that reaction to it before nor since, I'm not entirely sure of that.

Re: Fainting

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I have been quite close to fainting twice, but didn't actually faint.

One I was at school, I was 13 and on my period and felt awful already. And suddenly I realized I was sweating through my clothes and getting tunnel vision. It was actually a rehearsal for a end of the year event, so I couldn't just leave. Once we finished I went to get a bottle of water and drank it almost completely in one gulp. Thankfully I didn't faint, because talk about embarrassing!

Second time was also on my period (Heavy periods + Thalassemia is not a good combo) and after being in bed with no food because I felt so bad, I somehow thought that having a bath was the best idea and would make me feel better. Well, hot water apparently dilates your vessels and lowers your BP :D I almost fainted when getting out of the tub.

As I said before, I'm anemic and after that time I learnt not to take baths if I feel so bad, and if I'm feeling a bit light headed to eat some salt before bathing, because I end up feeling bad (I should stop taking baths maybe, but I like them! xD)

Actually this happened to me fairly recently. I was in class, I felt dizzy and nauseated, and then blacked out completely. When I came to, my classmates told me it looked like I had a seizure-- my back was arched, my hands clenched and up by my head, legs straight, eyes rolled back.

Turns out that I had a severe simple vasovagal faint, with convulsive features. Fun!

I felt dizzy once...

ONCE.

(No, seriously, that's the entirety of my fainting experiences. Fainting is a foreign concept to my body.)

Mostly, I just experience occasionally postural hypotension. My vision darkens and I get lightheaded, but I've never fainted

Re: Fainting

I only fainted once, when I was around 11 or 12. We were at the dinner table and I guess I must have swallowed something too hot? IDK, but one moment I was fine, the next thing I remember is my mum trying to pull me away from the table.

It was the weirdest thing.

Re: Fainting

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Once (about ten year ago) I was cleaning shoes sitting on the floor, then (quite fast) I stood on a chair to take something down from the top of the cupboard... the next thing I knew I was on the floor again, desperately clutching the leg of the kitchen table. It was a blood-pressure-related fainting, and it was almost familiar as I experienced the dizziness (vertigo?) before that, and since then several times, but never (ever ever) this drastic.
But fainting can be caused by a ridiculously lot of (common) things, so it's better to check this, especially if it had been a first time.
