It happened to me recently, after giving a blood sample for a study. What you experienced sounds like what happened to me, though I was stupid enough to try walking to a bathroom and ending up falling over.
What happened to me was Vasovagal Syncope or Vasovagal Response, and it's like when the wires in your brain get crossed and you blood pressure drops like crazy. If you're sitting down, you might not lose consciousness. I looked into it a lot because it freaked me out so much that my body could just do that for no reason. Ugh.

Well, the suddenly dropping blood pressure matches what mom told me - she said I went so pale that my skin had this greyish tint to it, like a chemotherapy patient.

I don't what your doctor told you, but vasovagal syncope doesn't happen without cause. Lack of sleep, improper diet, and high temperatures are the most common factors, but there are others. If it happened to you once, it WILL happen again. You need to talk to your doctor about the possible causes and determine what triggered it for you so you can avoid triggering it again. The things that triggered it for you can damage your vagal nerve even if you don't have another vasovagal event.

I didn't talk about it with a doctor, actually. The woman taking blood was just a researcher and said it was probably because I'd only had ~5 hours of sleep... But when I had blood taken recently they didn't seem worried, just told me to lie down flat. I hope it's okay :\

Go to a cardiologist. Please. Please please please. Vasovagal syncope is recurring and can have lasting, devastating effects. Aside from the most obvious effects on your heart and entire cardiovascular system, the events can damage any organ in your body due to lack of blood/oxygen supply.

Uh I *have* vasovagal syncope (due to low blood pressure), and have lived with it for decades. The only time I had fainting spells was during puberty (yay hormones) and as long as you're still breathing after you blackout, there is NO damage like you are suggesting.

Now, if your heart stops entirely, or restarts in an abnormal rhythm (which, believe me, you'll know), or if you stop breathing entirely, then yes those are causes for concern. It sounds to me like OP had a minor episode, and would likely not have done any of the damage you are shrieking about.

A visit to OP's GP may be in order, so s/he can decide whether or not to bring a specialist onboard.

Last time I had bloodwork done, they elevated my feet, told me not to talk, and gave me a five minute recovery window. I am not eligible to donate, though, because of this.

But didn't the op say it was after giving blood? That right there is the cause. Lots of people get vasovagal responses from having blood taken, and need to have it taken while lying down.

Yeah maybe ayrt missed that part. By "no reason" I meant that it was a very small volume of blood taken in a procedure that didn't register as serious to me (and that I'd had done before). I understand now what happened, but at the time I had no idea.
