Re: Bioshock 2 Racism Wank

Also white fans telling black people off for being upset at the racism on the game. Can we not.

I'm not going to decide not to engage with a person's publicly shared opinions based on their background.

The first scene of blatant racism in the game is jarring and upsetting and ought to be as that is the point. Racism is gross and wrong and upsetting and people shouldn't be so terribly upset when it is presented as gross and wrong and this has an upsetting effect.

Would it be better to have yet another trashy steampunk setting where we just kind of ignore racism? "Yes, the past was awesome! Corsets and mustaches!"

I would imagine "telling them off" and "not engaging whatsoever" are two different things. Like, there's a difference between just disagreeing, and swanning in and holding court like because one doesn't agree with the upset, or feel the upset themselves, that therefore means any upset is inherently ridiculous and shouldn't exist. Granted, this has less to do with race than with some people being pretentious fucks by nature, but has struck me, personally, as particularly obnoxious when people with majority representation in the media being argued over do it against minority critics over, and over, and over again, in the same ways, often with the same arguments. It's eerie, sometimes.

What publicly shared opinion of theirs are you referring to though? If a black person is upset at a game having racism on it and decides not to play the game because of that, what is even there to engage?

I think people should always have the final say in what media they consume. It's perfectly reasonable to me that someone who experiences racism might not want to spend their free, personal time playing a game that shows them something that they already know is gross by personal experience.

Wait, what? I think you misunderstood me. Maybe I misunderstood you too.

I'm talking about people who insist others not play it, and condemn the writers as racist for including racism in a game that takes place in 1912. I'm not talking about condemning people for not playing a game! You're right, that'd be awful.
