On the subject of #7, mostly

Biggest Avengers pet peeve/favorite thing about The Avengers? It doesn't have to be a fandom thing, but I'm curious. :)

The one time I watched it, the tv I was watching it had speaker issues so I could make out most of the dialoged. Not exactly a pet peeve, but counts for something, I hope.

I watched it a theater once where there were people running around changing seats. Eventually staff told them to stop, but they were literally getting up every few minutes to run somewhere else. So annoying.

Uughh, I saw it in a theater that had a bunch of bored and unsupervised children that kept chattering and running around... I mean, it was my second viewing so at least my first experience was awesome, but it was still annoying.

Yeah, this wasn't my first viewing, but it was so annoying. I saw it ANOTHER time when someone just kept their crying/loud kid in the theater. I get you want to see the movie, but it was a 9:30 PM showing and you take your baby??

I'm peeved that Chris Evans didn't get more butt-shots.

I think...just trying to shove it into everything and it ends up not being amusing or funny. I remember one comic where they all had a sleepover (But Black Widow and Spiderman weren't invited), and it was actually really funny. That's a rarity.

But then again, I didn't like the movie too much, so I don't care too deeply.

Frostiron. I won't say it to anyone who ships it, but I just don't get it.

And I know that the fact that Thorki is my OTP has a lot to do with that, LOL... which is also why I won't say anything about it. I know I'm being immature.

Just how certain fanon things catch on and are suddenly EVERYWHERE for no discernible reason. Clint in the air vents is my main one, though. Hate it.

There's also a preponderance of shovel talk fics, and that is one trope I absolutely loathe in general, but for some reason it seems especially jarring with most MCU characters (especially when it's about Natasha, or it's Natasha giving it; like, either she would care, or she wouldn't bother saying it).

Also not a huge fan of how often the "everyone is gay" trope shows up in fic, especially when people don't tag all of the pairings and I'm blindsided. (I know there's some debate about whether you should tag other pairings you only mention peripherally on AO3, because people get sick of fics without the pairing they're looking for as the main focus being all that shows up, but I'm firmly on the "tag it as secondary pairing" school of thought).

And don't even get me started on the treatment of Nick Fury, and how he mostly only exists in fic to be The Villain.

What's the shovel talk? Fanlore isn't giving me anything and urbn dictionary only talks about shoveling as acting disinterested to get a girl to like you.

Everyone, IRL and OL, expecting me to know the name of the actors (and details about them/their lives/careers)

I don't know and I don't care. I've never cared about actors. The actors don't determine if I watch something or who my fave char is.
I don't caaaare
I don't want to discuss the pros/cons of the actor and how someone's view on the actor affect their view on the character

/annoooyed
/because yesterday was talking to a friend about how awesome Black Widow was so she went on a rant about Scarlet ?johanssen? sucks and I don't fucking care, I liked Black Widow and i dno't caaaarrreee about feelings on the actoors

Clint/Coulson. They had minimal interaction in the movies, yet somehow it is such a big thing that it is in so many stories. I wouldn't even mind the stories that are solely Clint/Coulson, but they are so often a background pairing in other stories that I'd actually like to read.

Steve being written as stupid. As in, he cannot grasp new technology and is a huge oaf in general. Like, the dude was smart before the Super Serum and after it seriously helped him with memory recall. (If not other mental things as well.) Also people writing him as naive and innocent and prudish. Like, the dude fought in WW2. You cannot convince me someone could have come out of that war and be so damn innocent. And lastly? People writing him as being unfunny, as unable adapt, being sexist/racist/whatever, and being unable to ever correctly navigate social interactions with any finesse. There is a huge difference between being awkward and being completely and utterly socially stunted.

So yeah, a lot of issues with how people write Steve.

Augh, yes to all of this. It always gets me when they write Steve as being afraid of women who can fight (mostly Natasha). Pretty sure he was amused when Peggy punched dudes, not terrified.

Ugh, yes. If I recall correctly, when she punched out that douchebag he was impressed and thought it was funny. Unless I'm completely misremembering that scene.

I think he would treat Natasha the same way. He'd respect her abilities, know when she was/wasn't the best person for a job/maneuver, and find it funny when people underestimated her.

The comic I mention upthread pretty much has him being completely confused at technology, though to their credit it is, like, at a game console and not an oven.

Re: On the subject of #7, mostly

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-04-06 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think initial confusion is fine, especially for things that may not have had any lower tech equivalent or been in scifi books of the time. In fact, if it's really high tech let him be confused for a while.

But in a lot of fics he was such a slow learner about everything, even things that already existed in his time, that I'm left wonder how he knows how to tie his shoes. That and sometimes they'll say something like, "Oh, and this is his phone that he's had for months and he still doesn't know how to text."

I'm assuming that the fic you're talking about lasted the course of one night. Honestly, initial confusion wouldn't bother me in that instance. What would bother me is if he's had a lot of nights trying to figure it out and just can't. Also people who write him "giving up" on some "newfangled technology" and that blows my mind. Why would he ever give up trying to figure out new things?

When Natasha is written as this hard-core bitch who verbally attacks Steve for calling her 'ma'am' or holding a door open for her.

When everyone is 'terrified' of Natasha (i hate that in any fandom - the 'tiny, gorgeous girl who is a friend' that everyone is 'scared' of. Stoppit!).

When Bruce is so twitchy that being out of his favorite cereal causes him to Hulk out.

When Thor is an utter idiot who can't grasp...anything, really.

When Clint's a total goofball. When Steve's a total moron/dick. When Tony doesn't ever, ever, ever shut up, sleep, or eat. (I mean, like - so much so that in rl he'd be checked into a hospital.)
