BUT tbh I would far prefer it if her last name WAS "Romanova". I get that the English language doesn't really do gendered last names but still. She's a chick so she should be a "Romanova".

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)They have the "ov" because that's how "ов" is transliterated. The "off" is sometimes used because of the Russian way of making the ending sound soft, like an f instead of a v to American ears. Personally, I like the "ov" more than the "ff" because then it's easier for me to find words in my dictionary, when books/comics/etc. transliterate by how it sounds to the English speaker, I sometimes have difficulty finding the word in Russian.
Technically, her name *is* Romanova since she's Russian. I think we could do gendered last names for these characters, I mean, we have Anna Karenina and they keep the gendered endings and it's no big deal. Just include an explanation in a foreward/author's note/something and people would get it.
