I really like Christian music, as long as there's no obvious God talk. A lot of it isn't blatantly Christian, more just really positive messages. Which is cool.

In some ways, I think, that's what's so depressing about a lot of modern Christian music - it's so fucking boring. You have a system of thought with this much power - you have a huge tradition of great, powerful, beautiful poetry and writing and song, and passionately felt emotion - so how the fuck do you end up with the incredibly boring pablum we get now?

Some of it is probably aiming to be easily learnt and sung along to - which is one of the reasons I, life long atheist, really like it. I can tune into a bland christian rock station and sing along with the chorus by the second time it comes around, because it's all just simple and sweet and upbeat.

Personally, I think at least some of the blandness is due to marketability. Mainstream Christian music has been owned by the same people as the rest of pop music for a while now, ever since Christian music proved it could be successful back in the 90s or so.

Some of the Christian bands I liked as a kid--Luna Halo and Earthsuit--were dropped from their labels for being too, well...weird. They weren't as marketable because they did their own thing and had their own style, so you couldn't put them in a column in a Christian magazine with the tag line "If you like Nickleback, then you'll like XYZ!" (Yes, they actually do this.)

Honestly I'm a Christian but I stopped listening to most Christian music several years ago because if I wanted to listen to Lady Gaga I'd listen to Lady Gaga, not a Christian pop star deliberately manufactured to sound like her because she's popular. There's still good Christian artists out there, but more and more I'm finding that the ones I like are either independent artists, have been around for long enough that they're more or less untouchable (Newsboys is the only one here that comes to mind for me) or somehow managed to crossover into mainstream music (Luna Halo, Skillet, Mat Kearney, etc)
