whatever floats your boat

here's an atheist writer who loves christian imagery. i have an equally atheist friend who recently wrote an excellent (femenist-leaning?) poem from the perspective of jephthath's daughter contrasting it with the binding of Isaac:

"In the barren valleys yonder
for 40 days I have wandered
still I cannot help but ponder:
Would He lead to the slaughter
His devoted earthly daughter,
when He, who kept the promised land,
who stayed Abraham’s trembling hand,
sent in Isaac’s place, a ram,
to spare an earthly son?"

really the bible has some great stories in it.

so yeah! do what you want, OP.

Just wandered in to say that's a really great poem. props to your friend!

really the bible has some great stories in it.

It does. It seriously does.

If you approach it from the perspective of it just being folklore (which it is, really), then it's quite fascinating. To me, reading Bible stories is a lot like reading Nordic sagas. There's a lot of drama, a lot of fighting, and a lot of cultural and historical peculiarities to pore over.

Ooh, this is awesome.

It's a powerful system of thought and a beautiful one in many ways and one which has had an extraordinary number of intelligent, creative people working with it for thousands of years (not that it's unique amongst religions in that regard, but still). It's not surprising that it would resonate with you; it'd hardly have survived for two thousand years if it didn't have an extraordinary resonance on a deep human level

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like Christian music, as long as there's no obvious God talk. A lot of it isn't blatantly Christian, more just really positive messages. Which is cool.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
In some ways, I think, that's what's so depressing about a lot of modern Christian music - it's so fucking boring. You have a system of thought with this much power - you have a huge tradition of great, powerful, beautiful poetry and writing and song, and passionately felt emotion - so how the fuck do you end up with the incredibly boring pablum we get now?

After going to a Christian school for years (5th through 12th grade), I can definitely tolerate Christian music, but I heard SO MUCH of it that I don't really feel the need to listen to more.

(I also tried to make all the lyrics for songs we sang in chapel at school fit a ship or something. So if I heard any of those songs, 9/10 I'd probably think of Mulder/Scully).

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a Christian who is, unfortunately, bored to tears by the majority of Christian music x.x There are a few old hymns that I like, but I've tried and failed to find anything modern with interesting lyrics (which I guess to me means even slightly complex messages).

So, I guess this is a long-winded way of asking for recommendations?

OP

It's been a while since I listened to it regularly--the more political stuff rubs me the wrong way, so I switched to other radio stations, and went a long time without really thinking about it. I made this secret after finding one good Christian song, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zkUQMDvTY0 , on Youtube the other day.

I'm trying to remember other great Christian songs . . . I like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uextEnUYJZc and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pYxhS-X9C0 but they're a little more on the critical side. I'm okay with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7umsq5n1THw , but it's not really my favorite. Now that I think about it, the songs I most like are the ones that are mildly Christian like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdWB4IU1InI rather than full-on PRAYZ JEEZUZ!

ughhh i know what you mean re: terrible christian music. EVERYTHING IS HILLSONG! But fear not, there IS good music out there, it's just hard to find.

Here you go:

http://8tracks.com/deigratiaregina/christian-independent-different

also on 8-tracks, try searching for "christian" + "indie" or "alternative" or "independent"

If you like metal, there are some awesome christian metal bands out there (like Oh Sleeper & Underoath)

Personally, I also like Switchfoot, but they may not be to your taste.

Enjoy! There is a world of wonderful music out there waiting for you.

This guy is SUPER indie--I only know about him because he sang at a church I used to go to once--but I've found that I really enjoy listening to his music, even though it's pretty simple acoustic stuff, and I think part of the reason is that his lyrics seem to be a pretty genuine reflection from him rather than the bland, unthoughtful lyrics of a lot of music that gets on Christian radio. (Not that he's a master lyricist or anything, his songs are still pretty simple, but they feel real to me.)

His name is Scott Phillips. No relation to the Creed drummer, AFAIK. http://www.reverbnation.com/scottphillips/songs I recommend trying out "The Empty," it's my favorite song I've heard of his.

I hear ya. For me it's mostly old spirituals but Mumford & Sons does it for me too. And I'm very much an atheist and not even from a Christian background.

I was raised on Christian music so I can relate. Like, I don't really care for a lot of it because it seems try-hard to me but I loved "Circle" by Flyleaf because the tragic redemption message really got to me.

I really like Gungor (Ghosts Upon the Earth's album theme is stellar) and Brooke Fraser right now because their Christian stuff aren't so hokey.

Yeah, I'm an atheist and was raised as such, but a lot of religious music is uplifting. I just reinterpret wonder of God as wonder at the universe generally, and it's a similar feeling.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Anytime I find myself accidentally listening to Christian music, it's because I think it's just a love song, not a love song to God. They can be rather ambiguous. I prefer them as flat out love songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8cAU475dQo like this one :)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Was going to chime in in this vein. I love it when male singers make songs of love and devotion to some unspecified "him" so that I can fill both roles with my slash couple du jour.

Demons, angels, nephilim - what's not to like? Xian folklore is rich in all kinds of amazing and interesting imagery. I'm an atheist, myself, but i love to write about angels and demons.
