The thing about movie canon is that you have to realize that those of us reading the comics aren't going to make the chars completely different from their comic book counterparts.

To me Hawkeye will always be that sassy sarcastic guy who loves wearing purple and shooting his bow that I've been on and off following since I found out he existed.

To me Logan's background will always be the one I read in the first Alpha Flight series because Alpha Flight was my first big comic book love. Never mind that the man has a zillion and one backstories.

So Black Widow. To me her name last name is Romanova and I will contiue to use it. That doesn't mean one of her alias and maybe what she uses for SHIELD in the movie isn't Natasha Romanoff. That's one of her canon comic book aliases. She's used the name Rushman in the comics and in the movies too. I've seen it written in fic where she changes her name, in movieverse, to help with her emotional healing after what happened to her and that explanation works for me, but I'm still going to use the last name that I'm used to seeing her with. Part of that is even though when I write Avengers fic I tend to write in movieverse I also tend to bring in comic book references or other chars that I enjoyed who are or aren't Avengers in comic form. It a way to draw on the canon and make your own thing. Comic fic has done that for a long time...your X-men team can be any of the chars you really like, give them a situation and you have a fic.

If that doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you. That's not going to stop me from keeping Clint's background and trust issues from the comics. It's not going to stop me from finding ways to put Jan onto the team without Pym, or the Generation X chars that I miss and just don't get enough love, or even the Alpha Flight chars that I care about. I have no intentions of waiting until the next Captain America movie to start writing Winter Solider into fics...because well if you want to see some chemistry with Natasha you should read some Winter Solider. Write the char how you see her and someone else is going to write her in a completely opposite way because that's how they saw her. It happens. It's fic.

As long as you tag your stories "comics backstory" or whatever, I don't think anyone cares about the changes you make to MCU. If it's looked at as strictly MCU, though, you're just getting things wrong. It's an important distinction.

Well, when I get to the point where I'm writing in Clint's backstory/trust issues from the comics then yes I'd tag it to show that, but at this point I've mentioned in my prefic notes that I've referenced a comic book char and what book they're from. I've really only written a fic where I show that Bruce is upset and have Tony worry because Bruce had found out that a guy named Langkowski tried to recreate his experiment. It's a canon Alpha Flight reference, but as I didn't put Langkowski in the fic I didn't feel the need to tag it as such. I figured a note worked for that. I also used Everett Thomas in a fic, but again I put in a note explaining where the character came from and then in the fic had Clint explain who he was and what his powers were. At this point he's a background character, but if he becomes more prominant in the story I would appropriatly tag as such.
