i'm a christian but a lot more left-wing than my parents. went through some tough times in my life, became an atheist, an agnostic, and a wiccan (not all at the same time!), but now i'm a christian again.

for me religion is more similar to art or literature - the use of allegory and metaphors. it's more "unconscious" and intuitive, whereas science relies on logic and reason.

personally, i find no conflict between religion and science. they are two different instruments that people can use to create meaning out of the world.

but then the problem comes when people try to pit the two against each other, or try to apply science to religion, (or vice versa), or try to force their religion on others.
