Your religious views?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Thought it'd be interesting to discuss if it's kept civil.

Me? Raised Roman Catholic, but eventually figured out it wasn't for me. Took me a while to figure out things, but decided being agnostic works and makes the most sense to me.

Raised Roman Catholic, respectful atheist.

Pretty much like I said the last time we had a thread like this. From what I recall, there's a lot of ex-RC people on here.

i was raised an orthodox christian but i don't consider myself that anymore. i didn't bother to look after another label either.

Agnostic, because I was raised nothing. :) It literally never came up until I was in high school, then I thought about it for years, took a bunch of religious studies classes, and decided it wasn't for me. Same thing for all my siblings.

(Most religions are very interesting from an academic standpoint, though, if I can say that without offending anyone. One of my favorite classes ever was The Bible as Literature.)

Atheist.

Raised in an irreligious house, to atheist/agnostic parents, never entered my life in any meaningful way.

Raised Christian (Honestly, it could probably be a little more specific, because my mother would take me to one that I could only identify as 'Christianity', but my father went to Protestant services), currently respectfully indifferent.

Raised Southern Baptist, dabbled in Buddhism and Wicca before deciding fuck it, I'll invent my own. I now live by the code of "be a good person, damn it".

I was raised Christian, but seeing as we never actually did anything religious at all when I grew up, I never really cared for religion in general. I'm basically agnostic because religion plays no role in my life and I wouldn't consider myself Christian.

raised lapsed-Catholic, became born-again in high school, went full on fundy for a few years, and finally mellowed out. once under the influence of the internet, I eased way off on the religion and have essentially become That Which White American Evangelicals Hate. I haven't stopped believing as far as I can tell...I still like God a lot, it's just his fan club that I don't get along with. I consider it more of a C.S.Lewis-style intellectual belief, in which science and rational thought can easily co-exist with deism.

or, in much less wordy terms, christian-leftist.

I'm not religious at all. I like to believe things though. Stuff like outer space is dangerous for us because it's reserved for our spirits after we die. I made it up of course, but I like it. I like believing.

Re: Your religious views?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Raised religious? I guess???????? My Dad was a baptist reverend but most of our religion was still confined to church/school/special events and praying all the time at meals. he was openminded thankfully tho so having lesbian daughter and a gay son was fine.

I never believed though and got very good at politely ignoring anything religious. I think he was slightly disapointed at first, but by the time I started studying evolution in school he was disillusioned and had stopped being one. too much corruption (embezzling, coworkers caught diddling kids). he didn't press and I'm not baptised (at the time he was all about me coming to religion/baptising by my own decision and not because he baptised me when young)

I haven't asked him what he is now, he doesn't mention it and I don't ask. We share the same views on important things like human rights, sustainability, humane treatement of animals...religion kinda doesn't matter compared to those

so I'm athiest and I guess I've always been. I recall praying once or twice as a kid in a halfhearted manner for shit like "don't let my pet die while I'm at a sleepover"

On paper (like about 80% of Norway's population) I am Lutheran (Or Protestant if you prefer), I was baptised and I am still in the books as it, even if I didn't have a confirmation at 15. I opted to do the Humanist confirmation instead.

My family, like most Norwegian families are only Christian on paper (some go to church at Easter and Christmas).

And this long winded post could have been concluded quite quickly with: I am agnostic, was raised agnostic and so is almost everyone I know in Real Life. Though I did go to Sunday school for a short while as a child, but that was mostly to meet other kids, because my mother is poor and it was free.

Raised by parents from an offshoot of a hard-right evangelical protestant branch originating in Texas.

Hardline atheist after seeing all the damage those beliefs did to myself, my family, and everyone else in my church.

Slowly coming around to being more accepting of religion, as I grow to realize that not all belief systems are that toxic and vile.

My mom is an unbaptised Jehovah's Witness, which I never got into. My dad is agnostic, which I didn't understand until I began studying evolution at age 22, at which point I jumped from a shaky Unitarian Universalist worldview and straight into atheism. I like my local atheist community and am more passionate about the freethought movement than I was with UU or my other flirtations.

Raised Presbyterian and now am United Church of Christ. So raised Christian and still Christian. Just with a twist. :)

Re: Your religious views?

Raised by parents who were in two different churches (Methodist and C of E), who decided that me and my brother should be left to make our own minds up.

I ended up deciding that the church is full of BS. :)

So I don't really believe in anything, but I do quite fancy the idea of reincarnation.

Some days atheist, some days Pastafarian. I was raised a Protestant Christian, went to church regularly until I was eight, and believed for another five or so years after that before gradually losing my faith. Religion as a subject still interests me, but that's all now.

Kind of half-heartedly raised Catholic, which eventually tapered off (went to Catholic schools for a few years, then catechism class for one year after switching to public school, then we quit going to church except on holidays, then quit going altogether) and now an atheist, although tbh I sort of feel like I always was since even as a kid I never believed the stuff I was told in school/church.

Raised as Evangelic Lutheran, and I'm still one on paper, but I'm an atheist. My family wasn't that religious, so my religious upbringing was limited to the stuff they taught at kindergarten or school.

Raised sort of secular/pluralistic. Dad was a lapsed Lutheran, Mom was a very, very Reform Jew. I've always been an atheist. When I was very small, I didn't realize that adults believed in God. I thought He was just like Santa, and they liked to tell kids He was real.

My extended family is culturally Catholic, only the older members are devout, and my mom is the only one of her generation really into the whole Christianity thing, having been a nun, then a born-again, and now largely non-denominational/worships at home rather than at church. So when I was little I was raised in some denomination or other, I want to say Evangelical. When I moved to Cincinnati I went through Catholic school. As I got older I went from deist to agnostic theist to apatheist to atheist. I used to play advocate and defend religious folk from Dew-slamming Dawkins worshipers like The Amazing Atheist or The Omniverse, because those guys are terrible people with terrible opinions. But following last year's election I realized I'm done with religion and I can't really defend it anymore.

Raised Episcopalian Christian, I still like it in theory, but I went to a Covenant Christian School 5th-12th that was pretty conservative and kind of burned me out for religion. I still really like the Episcopalian church, and I believe that there's SOME kind of higher power/purpose, but I think I'm more agnostic now.

Raised Jewish - I still consider myself to be Jewish, but in ethnicity only (Ashkenazi, specifically), not as a follower of Judaism. Around age twelve, I started questioning things, wobbled vaguely into Wicca and other Neo-Pagan things, slid out of that and considered myself to be 'spiritual', then got more into science, looked at all these inconsistencies, proof, the scientific method, and have considered myself to be an agnostic atheist since I was nineteen or so.

(Not a contradiction of terms! Atheism refers to believes - it's my personal belief that there isn't a deity. However, as there isn't absolute evidence that there is, and indeed, absolute evidence in anything scientific is... well, not scientific, that also includes the agnostic tag. It's also very possible to be an agnostic theist, as well as a non-agnostic atheist or theist, where the person believes wholeheartedly that there is or is not a deity, never mind the evidence.)

Additional bit: went to a Jewish school, full immersion in the culture and religion. First cousins on my father's side are full-on Orthodox (via their father, my aunt's husband). Father is still religious. Mother was religious, but ended up sliding out of that as well - she's spiritual and believes in a deity and in reincarnation and stuff like that, but doesn't follow Judaism any more.

I'm a practicing cradle Roman Catholic. My family practices a very 'cafeteria style' form of Catholicism and we're all pretty liberal. I'm probably the closest thing to a conservative the family has.
