What causes a large fandom?
(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)Re: What causes a large fandom?
(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)-A host of characters who aren't entirely one note, but have a clear archetype.
-Need at least one protagonist to allow the audience to project onto.
-Not lowest common denominator but simple enough to reach a wide audience (being popular doesn't guarantee a fanbase but outside cult hits you very rarely see large fandoms for unpopular shows).
-New material being released, or likely to come out in the foreseeable future.
Re: What causes a large fandom?
(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)Especially snarky attractive white male characters who are not in a committed relationship by the end of the movie or during the show

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)So no.
Re: What causes a large fandom?
Although now that I think about it, I think the original assertion of cute white dudes is a pretty big generalisation. I know a couple of fandoms (anime fandoms, to begin with) that don't.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)- Aimed towards a younger generation
Re: What causes a large fandom?
Hype
Attractive characters
Marketing
Crazy fans
Re: What causes a large fandom?
(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 04:19 am (UTC)(link)That was in reference to Glee (because continuity?? characterization??? it doesn't make sense! we need to make it make sense!) but can obviously be applied to Harry Potter or Supernatural.
Something that initially gets you excited, and then lets you down with unsatisfying world or character development (you can say hot guys... but I don't think those fandoms last).
Re: What causes a large fandom?
For example, Star Wars. Tells one story of a potential 284,384,096 other stories that could be done in that universe with those characters using any fraction of what happens in canon -- from nothing but setting to setting and backstory only to one movie to two movies to three movies -- to fuel your discussion/merchandise/pop-cultural osmosis/memes/costumes/art/fanfic/etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 06:23 am (UTC)(link)I just stared at that sentence for a full minute, I hope it makes sense :\
