It honestly is the exact same thing that people do with het ships. The annoying part, though, is that so many people latch onto the REPRESENTATION!!1 thing and try to act like they're being warriors for justice, when really they just want to see a couple they like confirmed in canon. Nothing wrong with wanting that, mind you, but it gets a bit tiresome when people go around crying about how their need to see their OTP onscreen is all about equal rights. Also, just because a couple is m/m or f/f doesn't mean they're going to automatically going to be good representation, which I think is what bothers a lot of people.
