I don't see how this is a slash issue, tbh. Rival hetships are just as likely to petition show runners, and just as likely to cuckoo up the characterization you were digging if the writers are swayed by 'em. I mean at least with a gay ship you could console yourself that even if your show goes to shut, a real life baby gay somewhere is probably going to get a disproportionately important life-affirming revelation out of it.

Oh Christ fucking jesus on a crap-arsing bicycle. "cuckoo" should be "ducked" and "shut" "shit". My new phone is a ballsing prude.

It honestly is the exact same thing that people do with het ships. The annoying part, though, is that so many people latch onto the REPRESENTATION!!1 thing and try to act like they're being warriors for justice, when really they just want to see a couple they like confirmed in canon. Nothing wrong with wanting that, mind you, but it gets a bit tiresome when people go around crying about how their need to see their OTP onscreen is all about equal rights. Also, just because a couple is m/m or f/f doesn't mean they're going to automatically going to be good representation, which I think is what bothers a lot of people.

We're not pissed off because they're petitioning show runners. Actually I would love that, go nuts, it wasn't even that long ago that slash was a super-sekrit activity. Treating slash ships exactly the same as het ships = my fucking dream. Acting as if shipping slash makes you a fucking queer activist = my nightmare.

I love this, I agree with it, and if you don't mind I think I'll save it so I have a succinct way of telling "you don't ship my gay OTP you must be a raging homophobe!" people to go write angry letters to congresscritters for passing anti-gay legislation instead of bothering me because I maybe ship a different gay ship than they do.
