Random question re: strangers in accidents

[personal profile] othellia 2013-04-06 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So this is a really odd question, but I don't really have anywhere else to ask it.

My mom and I saw an older man get hit while running across a crosswalk yesterday and he was in really bad shape. We were on the sidewalk right nearby and stayed until the ambulance took him away. (We didn't actually see what led up to the collision and several other people did, so we didn't give our statements to the police.)

What I'm wondering is if there's any place I could call to see if he made it out alright? (I'm about 80% sure I know what hospital he was taken to.) I know me knowing won't have any impact on whether he lived or died, but I still want to know and maybe pass along a message for a healthy recovery if he did. I know hospitals have a bunch of privacy policies nowadays so it might be impossible, but if anyone knows a bit more about it than I do, I'd love to know.

Thank you.

You could call the hospital and explain the situation and just say you'd just like an update or to see how he's doing. Make sure you explain you don't want any personal details, just to make sure he's okay. I think that would be completely appropriate.

You can call the police station, tell them you were a bystander and want to know if he's ok. They're informed of the person's status so they can get their reports right, if it's listed as a fatal or not, so they'll know how that person is doing. They won't tell you any details, but they'll usually tell you if they're alright or not.

I'd say your best bet is probably calling the hospital and like anon above me said, make it clear you don't want personal details, but just to know if he's okay.

Also, I'm glad there were people there who witnessed the accident and people like you and your mother who could stay with him until help arrived. Being in an accident like that would be terrible. :

Yeah, that's the one good thing I'm taking from the experience. Other than calling 911 - which I swear 20 other people called at the same time because the lines were busy for over 30sec - I didn't do much just because there were already so many other people helping.

The accident happened in a very congested part of town, so within the first minute you had people handing over shirts and towels to help stop the blood flood, another woman started directing traffic so the firetruck/police could get through. Thank God, one of the witnesses was a nurse, so she pretty much took charge of things until the EMTs arrived.

Even some foreign tourists who had been walking stopped and asked me if there was anything they could do to help.

ntayrt, That is awesome, I'm really glad to hear about so many people willing to help out of the blue like that.
