It's the batshit crazies vs the WTFers

So, a lot of people have mentioned that there are some who will support gay characters in fiction but don't support gay rights in real life. A lot of other people have never seen this in their life, or only seen it a very small portion of the time. I've seen a few instances of these, few and far in between (most likely a function of where I live more than anything else), but I understand if a lot of people have seen this a lot more often.

I will say this: I'm a goal-oriented end-result person, so if someone is supporting gay marriage, even if it's for their OTP? Eh, I think it's tacky and tasteless, but hey, that's another person supporting gay marriage in the real world.

I can definitely see the problems people might expect of someone who is only in it for fictional character, but as long as they are still supporting gay marriage in the world world, then the benefits far outweigh the potential costs.

And yes, even just saying you support something is important. Say what you want about those "pointless" red equal sign profile pictures on Facebook, but ever since the campaign started, over half a dozen U.S. Congresspeople have come out in open support of gay marriage, because hey, here's very easy to see proof that doing so is politically viable for them.

That is the main goal. Getting the people in our government to change their minds so that all of us can get our rights. It would be nice if it was done for the right reasons and all, but that's not the most important thing. The most important thing is to get this shit done, and getting it done the 'right' way is a nice bonus, but not something we have to count on, not right now.
