there's a pretty massive and east to distinguish line between drawing lessons from fiction, and supporting gay marriage because of your gay otp

i mean, seriously, what

I dunno, man, I've known someone (IRL, even!) who really did think that way. Granted, it was years ago, and granted, the someone was totally crazycakes on top of everything else. But she really did think that way.

Then again, her idea of gay marriage was to marry a gay man and, and I quote, "have his gay babies." I told her it doesn't work that way and she called me a racist.

I'm not exactly sure where I was going with this so just enjoy my anecdote of the most genuinely batshit yaoi fan I've ever met.

You don't need the Supreme Court to have fictional characters get married or in a civil partnership, though. You can write that in, even if you have to handwave it.

Liking m/m pairings does not make a person an ally automatically. Actually doing something to support queer people (beyond getting behing whatever viral things the HRC or GLADD are trying to promote) is.

As someone who currently isn't allowed to gay marry, I say go for it. Fuck, if yaoi is what's going to make them support gay marriage and support advocacy groups and vote for politicians that will pass the right bills then I don't care why they're doing it. If them wanting Derek/Stiles to be real will help to let me marry, I don't give a fuck.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing I don't get about the hate about this approach is that the end result is still the same: more people supporting gay rights.

It doesn't matter if they support it because they're gay, or because they know someone who is, or because they just think it's the right thing, or because they like Glee, or because they think that it'll make double rainbows happen more often.

They're still supporting the right side of an issue, and there's no point in discouraging people for doing that just because their logic is severely flawed. The end result (more votes/signed petitions/people at rallies, and therefore a better shot at complete legalisation) is the same.

I mean, I get both sides. One the one hand, I've met plenty of people who try and take a holier-than-thou approach to their OTPs, and if you don't agree with them, you are homophobic. OTOH, I agree that making connections to real life and fiction is something a lot of people do and it's usually harmless, or even helpful.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
using fictional people in your argument for gay rights is fucking gross to me, and it always will be. any 'ally' that does that can stay far away from me. if that hurts their feelings....don't give a fuck.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I like to think that anyone who's at the point of holding signs at rallies (My Gays?? REALLY?) isn't going to just stop believing in mariage equality because someone yells at them. They're still going to be on the right side of the issue.

If Blurt, or whatever, is what gets people to support equal rights, then viva la Blurt. Hell, if your astral plane hasubando is what makes you support marriage equality, I'll go with it.

For me it depends. For some, it's harmless and it if it gets them to support it, awesome. For some they just...take it far enough that, at the very least, it comes off like they don't even think of us as people. "My gays" for example, reads to me more like they think of us as objects than people, and that's just cringe worthy and yeah. Gross.

Yeah but do you not see how that sign is inappropriate and offensive

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between seeing a connection between their gay OTP and similar issues in the world today, and I WANT GAY MARRIAGE TO BE LEGAL SO MY OTP CAN MARRY. Just. No. Go away.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I don't think they should tell people to shut up, because we can use all the support for marriage equality that we can get. On the other hand, I do think people should point out that going to that kind of rally and making a sign about how gay marriage should be legalized so your OTP can marry is fucking ridiculous. Fiction can be a powerful tool for influencing people's opinions and making them more open minded, but at the end of the day, these people are rallying for rights for real life, actual people. Saying that you want marriage equality so that a fictional couple that the ruling realistically does not affect their ability to get married is kind of idiotic. Well intentioned for most, I think, but still idiotic. Also kind of hurtful, since it implies that the person cares more about a fictional couple than actual people who are having their rights denied.

Most people with those signs probably don't realize that's what they're implying, so people pointing out to them that it comes across in that way isn't a bad thing. If they're really supportive of actual marriage equality, I don't think they'll quit supporting it just because someone pointed out that their methods are a bit misguided.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
cool story bro: i went to this signholder's tumblr back when this picture was going around and she had a page on her tumblr called "my lgbt activism history," which was a sappily-written tribute to saying everything she's done for the gay community, with pictures

she'd done a lot which was nice to see, but the whole thing and the fact that it was an unprompted link on the front page of her tumblr felt a little self-congratulatory. plus, she was getting a lot of asks about how her sign was inappropriate, and she kept acting slightly defensive and linking to that page in response, as though that made it all fine...?

i very much value our allies and all, but i wish they wouldn't use us like this...

I don't like it to the extreme we see on the internet, but using fictional characters to prove a point is quite okay in my book. Or to make something more familiar. I wish there where more bisexual characters in media so I could say to my family that I am just like "character A" and you like her on that show right? Because a lot of hatred towards minority groups comes from the fear of the unknown and/or lack of knowledge or personal experience.

Holding up signs with fictional LGBT people, when we got quite awesome Real Life LGBT folks, isn't how I would go about doing it. Though I did once use the argument "Neil Patrick Harris is gay and you like HIMYM?" to shut up my step brother when he complained about this gay celebrity in Norway...

We where taught about "everyday racism" in High School with the example: Person A hates all Minorities, except the minority person they play football with on the weekends, that person is nice, it is just all other minorities that are evil.

And to change that we have to understand that the majority of people are like the one you can put a name on, not like the ones you hear about on the news.

I know I had a point with the last part, I am not sure if it got through? Ah anyway I'll stop writing now.

So long as they're equally supportive about two women being allowed to marry then idgaf if they're supportive of equal marriage because of yaoi or something else.

I'd side eye anyone who was all "yay for the men getting married to each other!" but then didn't extend the same attitude to women.

Honestly? (thankfully no one will see this) I don't care WHAT your personal beliefs are as long as you don't use them to hamper other people's rights. You can be homophobic all you like as long as you don't think that your personal beliefs should have any effect on what laws are passed.

It's very trivializing and insulting to have someone usurp an important issue that effects real people in order to promote your OTP.

Your OTP doesn't face the issues real people face. They can live in a utopia where nothing bad ever happens and everything they want can come true -- because they are fictional, and the only restrictions to their existence is the ones you make for them.

By all means support the causes you believe in, but do it because you believe they benefit real people, not because it's fodder for your shipping fantasies.

I feel the same. It actually seems to me the outrage over stuff like this is more about people wanting to have someone to scream at? like ugh fangirls they're the worst ugh ugh you're a girl that likes slash what a horrible ally you must be

Who cares? why does it matter that she's a fangirl, so long she's not voting for homophobic politicians, she could influencing her young not to be homophobic, hell simply not being bigoted herself is already awesome and I don't see why I should care that she likes to daydream about TV gay dudes her spare time.

I wonder if this girl got harassed on the day they took this picture. Or what she thinks of the reaction it has had on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree? My family was really conservative, and I grew up being taught that being gay was wrong. It wasn't until I started reading slash fic that I started to think about the issue myself. I then read through all the arguments and realized that I was wrong about it.

On the other hand, there are people who really are only for homosexuality because of their slash and for no other reason at all. And that's creepy.
