Hey man, I don't care if you're a decent person because the invisible sky bats tell you they'll fuck you up if you don't. Just be a decent person. There are entire religions with the moral foundation "be a good person or God will mess you up".

Oh, dear, not this again. To be a good person means to follow good. If a God dislikes the opposite, this is because the actions have merit in themselves. There is a reason the Golden Rule actually works in a number of contexts.

I'm sure it makes you feel all smug to believe that "religious people don't really care about being decent, it's just fear" but you are simply wrong.

I personally believe that most religious people who do good things do them with the same amount of... of caring about decentness as nonreligious people, although you can get into a long and tedious argument about, say, whether wanting to be seen as a good person is a good reason for doing things that make you a good person. If you really want look for ulterior motives, you can almost always find some. I don't see much of a point to it.

However, I do think religious people who claim you can't be a good person without the fear of God are pretty clearly saying they're only good people because they're scared.
