Supporting gay marriage for this reason isn't harmful, any more than being eco-conscious solely because 'AWW POLAR BEARS!!! :(" hurts the planet.

Making a sign like this a public face of the cause you're trying to support can be actually counter-productive. (I'm pro-life, and someone on 'my' side carrying signs telling people they're going to hell doesn't feel like it's helping.)
