I think there's a difference between gaining empathy because characters you care about wouldn't be able to marry irl, and supporting gay rights only because characters you care about wouldn't be able to marry irl. That's a stupid ass sign that shouldn't be carried in public (embarrassed for them rn) and whoever is holding it is a giant moron. A supportive moron, but a moron.

I'm gay and I've joked that I wish gay marriage was legal so my OTP could marry, and I've had straight friends that joke in the same way. But when it comes down to it, they understand that real life > characters and that gay marriage and other rights are important because they affect real people. If you don't have any gay friends irl, and Kurt and Blaine are your only sympathetic connection to gay people, then sure you can think about how their situation might be to invoke empathy in yourself, but jesus christ don't stand out there with a sign and make a fool of yourself.
