I think it has more to do with outward appearances. Fangirls/slash fans don't have the best reputation. Getting butthurt at someone for supporting your cause for "the wrong reasons" is stupid, but I can understand why they may not want that sort of representation. But then, why not just say "I support gay rights because people should be able to love each other" and leave out the fact that you're thinking about fictional characters?
