It used to irritate me that fangirls would couch their shipping agendas in LGBT rights stuff, but then one day it occurred to me that if fanbrats petitioning for Destiel or Sterek to become canon somehow miraculously puts more gay characters on television, I'm okay with that.

Americans are pretty much raised on pop culture and television, we can't avoid it. More gay characters on tv means that more people will come to see gay as 'normal', and that can only help.
