I can understand not wanting to be side swiped by angst or major character death you aren't expecting, but if it bothers you that much, then maybe you should either find someone who's willing to pre-read things for you, or just steer clear of authors who choose not to warn. I know the latter isn't always an option outside of AO3, but if it really bothers you that much, then maybe you shouldn't be reading fanfic. Authors don't owe it to you to ensure you never read something that makes you feel bad, sorry.

There is a difference between angst and sudden Major Character Death. A HUGE difference.

NA

Still, you have no right to complain, if you don't like it - DON'T READ IT. Nobody is forcing you to read it..

You sound as one of those who has every right to complain but then isn't 'entitled to leave reviews either'.. you guys are so shitty, no wonder nobody wants to write anymore..

How the hell does one not read Major Character Death if it is in no way indicated that there will be Major Character Death? Am I supposed to use my pre-cognition?

You're supposed to look at the genre, gauge the tone of the story, and use that squishy thing between your ears to determine that hey, maybe this fic about a long and bloody war that's been labelled tragedy might contain character death.

Especially if it's on AO3 and the author's hit "chose not to warn", since there are only a handful of archive warnings that could apply to.

Best comment. Thank you.

Like FFS "tragedy" is a pretty big give-away already that some really shitty stuff is going to happen... And in fic that generally is character death or like really awful suffering. This idea that authors must cushion their work with a billion tags for the people who can't understand tone & the word "tragedy" is ludicrous.
