I didn't read all this because it was too long. But I do agree with some of what I did read. Put in warnings fanfic writers even if it will ruin your surprise ending. Especially if it does not end up being the pairing you said it was or if there is Major Character death(see my rant yesterday in General about a fic I read).

I can understand not wanting to be side swiped by angst or major character death you aren't expecting, but if it bothers you that much, then maybe you should either find someone who's willing to pre-read things for you, or just steer clear of authors who choose not to warn. I know the latter isn't always an option outside of AO3, but if it really bothers you that much, then maybe you shouldn't be reading fanfic. Authors don't owe it to you to ensure you never read something that makes you feel bad, sorry.

Holy fucking brick wall, Batman.

But I read it anyway, and I agree with you.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel kind of the same way, anon. A friend of mine once asked if I wished I could forget my favourite book so that I could read it for the first time again, and the notion kind of horrified me. In fact, I don't like doing much of anything for the first time. I like knowing what to expect so that I can make sure things are going all right. I guess it's a control thing? I mean, one of the reasons I read fanfiction instead of books is because with fanfiction I already know the story of the source material and its prominent themes and such, and a lot of fanfiction stays pretty close to canon in most ways. I think if anybody refused to tell me what happens in a show/story/whatever because they think it would "ruin" the experience, I would have a serious problem with them. And then I'd look it up anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I go into fics--or any media really--expecting my emotions to get toyed with if it's any good, because that's one of the biggest reasons people create things. To affect people emotionally. So the whole "my emotions are not your toys!!" bit at the end there is quite odd. Yes, they are. They soooooo are.

Um, not liking spoilers doesn't mean they don't read/watch things more than once. It's just a different experience to watch things when you don't know what's gonna happen vs knowing what's gonna happen, and your "not knowing what's gonna happen" experience can imprint itself on your memory of that thing and alter the way you feel about it on rewatch.

See #5

I find that spoilers don't bother me all that much either. And considering #3 from that article up there, I really hate major character death and Everybody Dies too. The only time I get touchy about spoilers is when it comes to my favourite TV shows, which narrows it down to exactly one miniseries, and it's an adaptation of an already-existing work (although it is rather unfaithful), so yeah.

otoh, the parts talking about how wordy this secret is make me suspect you're just saying it for the sake of a wordy secret.

I agree and in fact I don't mind spoilers. A couple of reasons. One is that in fact spoilers don't really "spoil" the enjoyment of something really good, even if you believe that they do. Think about it, if someone has spoilt something for you, but it's good, you still enjoy it. And well they've researched it and found that being spoilt isn't the big deal people make out. Although I do mean the sorts of things that are in warnings, not a whole outline of the plot including the ending. That would just be weird.

The other reason, this is fan fiction, life is way too short to waste it on fan fics that will end up upsetting me, or I'll regret reading it. I'd rather not start it in the first place. There are pairings I don't like reading, there are characters I don't want to be dead at the end of the story. So I'd rather be warned. Put it behind one of those white text things if you like, I'll read it.

Outside of fandom, what do you do? I'm genuinely curious about this... I mean, if you want to read an obscure book you're shit outta luck if you must first know exactly what happens (and reading the last page wouldn't help you much).

If you claim to respect people who dislike warnings -- and say you just want the same in return -- it seriously clashes with comments like "if you don't want to warn because it might spoil your masterful work of art, get a grip". I also think the whole LOL I'm gonna make this secret as pointlessly long as possible, just to piss certain people off attitude detracts from your secret, but hey, that's your choice.

I hate spoilers with a passion. I just can't turn my brain off, it turns the entire movie/book into a puzzle that I'm approaching from the wrong angle and I can't focus on the plot. I don't even watch trailers for movies I am sure I will see, because there's too much information in them and I just don't forget shit.

But I do appreciate your perspective. There are plenty of ways to put spoilery warnings somewhere that only interested people will see them. I don't see how it's different than labeling pairings.

I think everyone should just respect what everyone else wants and doesn't want. I've come across people with the same opinions as you on it, OP, but they were always the ones who spoiled something for me. I'm very sensitive to spoilers. I think literally anything can be a spoiler. I very rarely even watch trailers to some things lol

Eh, I don't really mind spoilers, as long as I can control when it's spoiled for me. I already knew Ned Stark's big spoiler long before the TV series was announced, but hadn't read the books, so that whole season I was wondering IS THIS IT IS THIS THE TIME OMG which was kind of fun in its own way!

Pfft. It's fine to say "I like spoilers, give me them." Your whole "I'm sorry you don't know how to enjoy things" shtick is weak and obnoxious, though. If I want to experience it after knowing everything, I can choose to do that on my own after I've already seen it. That's the big difference: you can spoil yourself or watch something twice (I frequently do), but I can't unspoil myself.

If I don't trust you, I'll be reading the end first anyway.

So... do that? If you prefer it, just do it. I'm glad it works for you. (What does that even mean, anyway, though? Why would you trust any writer not to write stuff you don't want to read? I'd never make that assumption.)

Bar a few things that can be warned for in fanfiction (rape, self-harm, sometimes character death and the like), I hate spoilers of any kind, because they prevent me from experiencing something in the order it was meant to be experienced. It's like knowing bits of of something that's meant to be viewed as a whole, before you know their contexts, and it's cool if you prefer that, but I really don't.

The idea that I can't enjoy things more than once is silly, though - I just enjoy them differently the next times than I do the first times. And I like having that contrast, actually.

I'm not really sure what I'm even saying anymore... I'm glad you've found the way that you like to experience things? I don't care how long the secret was? I'm really curious to know whether this extends to long comments on secrets, and if so, if you have read this, did you read this paragraph first?
