Hahahahha, I'm your evil twin: I hate NOT being spoiled with a passion, because, as you said, it turns the entire story into a puzzle and I can't focus on enjoying the story, because I'm sitting there trying to figure out what happens next. When I know already, I can sit back and enjoy the ride and appreciate the character development and the processes that the people in the story go through.

And, kinda making a reply to the thread in general here, I totally respect other people's experience of knowing plot/character-development details as spoiling the story for them, but it's NOT "spoiling" for me, and when I ask someone right out about a story and they refuse to tell me "Because it'll spoil it for you!!11!11!oneoneoneeleventy-one!1!" I am like, "Plz to not be dictating my experience of entertainment media to me, okay?" Real life has all the surprises I need; I don't need 'em in my happyfuntiems. (And, yes, in non-fannish media, I read ends of books first, I google plot summaries, etc.; in fact it's easier to get my fix of knowing-what-comes-next for non-fannish media.)

It's like I went anon and types this up myself......................

Sorry, couldn't resist. Yeah, it's like that for me exactly, down to the googling plot summaries and all.

I don't know, considering how I'm about to tl;dr all over this thread I'm probably the evil one? *strokes goatee*

Reading all the stuff in this thread I think the difference is that I am reasonably picky about what I read/watch/care about, and I since I don't have any triggers or especially sensitive issues the things that really bother me are badly done, problematic narratives. I know what you're talking about because I recently read a fic that was, intentionally, about an abusive dysfunctional relationship - but since this is FANFIC about a major fandom OTP I was just so so unsure if the author was being incredibly creepy on purpose I kept on skipping ahead, I just wanted to know what was going on, and I didn't enjoy it at all. And when I watched Aliens I insisted my BF warn me every time someone was about to die. SO I UNDERSTAND. But that rarely happens to me.

I trust some creators, and if I don't trust them I'm unlikely to watch it. I suspect I read and watch less than many people in fandom :\

I think this is a problem for a lot of people in fandom because we get involved in stories to a much greater degree than other people. I can see why people have such strong opinions on it.
