Anyone wanna talk about the new Doctor Who?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
My general impression: lots of good stuff, some stupid stuff, I totally cried a bit like a sucker, but mostly holy shitballs, some parts of this was more RTD than the RTD era. I almost expected to see Ten instead of Eleven at some points.

Also, they're not even trying to pretend that the sonic isn't a magic wand anymore.

Last week's strongly reminded me of The Idiot's Lantern, this week's strongly reminded me of The Satan Pit. I mean I liked it, but when he was talking to the planet-god-thing I couldn't get Ten and his orange spacesuit out of my head.

ooo definitely! this week's episode reminded me a lot of the that episode but I couldn't pin it exactly. I like Jenna Louise Coleman so far as a companion, but I'm not sure how I feel about the latest adventures.

This is the second episode in a row that felt like a ripoff of an RTD era ep. I'll give the show one more try but there is a good chance my days of watching Doctor Who are over. At least until they get rid of Moffat, I mean.

Moffat didn't write the latest ep...?

No he's the showrunner. It's entirely possible to dislike how he runs the show even when he didn't write a particular episode's script. Especially since he's one of the worst showrunners the BBC has ever had.

Hmm, true enough. I certainly can't wait for him to go.

Mostly: WHOA SATAN PIT FLASHBACKS.

Also: WHOA BEAST BELOW FLASHBACKS.

And: WHOA IS THIS MOS EISLEY?

But I didn't care :) I really really loved some parts and some scenes, and that's what mattered to me. However, it was unfocused to the point of being totally aimless in the middle section. And the memory themes didn't mesh with the religious themes so well. And the villain was kind of eh. Good concept, but not developed so well by the story.

I loved Clara here, although I still don't quite have a handle on her. I wonder if her "I don't think it likes me" comment about the TARDIS will be significant or just a throwaway?

And I squawked at the mention of Susan :) I think that's the first time he explicitly referred to her in the new series.

And IA about the screwdriver. *facepalm* Would it have been so hard to pick up or jury-rig some doodad from the market to use instead?

I love your icon <3 Ten's hair in that episode was a character all its own.

It's one of my favorite icons <3 And his hair is alway a character IMO, it was just...especially energetic in that ep ;)

Is it just me, or did Eleven seem a lot like Ten in this episode? He's not usually so forthright or hot-blooded.

I really liked it. I'm pretty sure it was slightly stupid and I'll notice after it's not so fresh in my mind, but IDGAF, after three Moffat episodes in a row I'm so glad to see some good earnest feeling that isn't packed into quick impact moment and one-liners that I don't really care if it was silly or soppy or not.

The speech bit reminded me so much of Ten. I thought it was beautiful but at the same time it feels like we've been there before.

Hopefully the episodes will pick up a bit soon, because while I'm enjoying Clara not much about this season excites me.

Huh, I'd have to see it again to know, but maybe? Can't remember if his dialogue was Ten-ish, but the speech kinda was. Not that Eleven doesn't make awesome OTT speeches everyone now and then too, but he's almost always bluffing or threatening someone when he does it, like in The Pandorica Opens, not pouring out his soul the way he did here. Sometimes scripts are written and then tossed aside for years before getting dusted off and rewritten for the current season...

It's too much fluff and too shallow. And it's a crime they aren't using a great actor like Smith to his full capacity. That Time Lord speech he gave in the last episode was a rehashing of past speeches but, man, did he sell the tar out of it. I was choked up as well.

I think I am spoiled by American sci-fi with their serial stories. I don't want Doctor Who to be these neat little contained stories. I want them to be like chapters in a book. Not just little hints of what may happen in the future. I want an over all story arch so we can get some character growth and story development.

Re: Anyone wanna talk about the new Doctor Who?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the opposite. I like contained stories in Doctor Who, when they're arranged in such a way that you still get consistent character growth. I don't like Doctor Who being too arc-y, because it's a total waste of the premise: it's characters wandering around to see the universe in a ship that can go anywhere in time and space. Restricting that format with a single story, or not using that format to visit a different spot with a different story and to explore a different idea each time would be a huge letdown and exclude so many possibilities.

In other shows? I love strong story arcs, but not not not NOT in Doctor Who. That's what I hated so much about season 6, where half the episodes were hijacked for telling one single story and it seemed like the show's whole fundamental premise was just window dressing.

Now, consistent overall themes and character arcs that follow from episode to episode even though the "plot" of each episode is totally different, yes, I'm very much down with that. And DW has done a very good job of it, especially in seasons 1, 3 and 4.

Though I suppose there are some types of stories that would facilitate the show's premise. Like the "Key to Time" arc in the Old series, where Four and Romana were trying to track down the scattered pieces of a superpowerful weapon/tool from all over time and space.

+1 To all this. I love story arcs in other shows but in Doctor Who? Probably not. And if series 6 is an example of how the show would be with story arcs then DEFINITELY not.

I think subtle arcs are okay, like you said series 1, 3, and 4 did it well enough where what was in the finale was hinted at in the background, but it's something you could easily miss or even ignore if you wanted to and get involved in just that individual episode.

Moffat era has suffered from being to obsessed with the overall story arc, to the point that it can sometimes ruin individual episodes.

You must have LOVED series 6. Which most people hated. Fortunately for most of us, it seems the Beeb has learned from series 6 of DW and the last two disaster miniseries of Torchwood that most people won't bother watching a story that can't be cleverly told in one or two episodes. We still get character growth and aren't limited to it being based on a single, drawn out (and therefore immensely boring) story arc.

Last TWO? Children of Earth was generally very well-recieved by critics and casual viewers (by fans...not so much). I thought only Miracle Day was a disaster.

CoE was a ratings failure.

...what? CoE got better ratings than every single episode of Series 1 & 2.

Hm, maybe that is why I was so not impressed by that episode, because I actually disliked a large portion of how RTD ran the show.

Unpopular opinion.

I liked it. Sure it wasn't amazing but I liked the... smallness, I guess you could put it. The moment where Clara helped calm the little girl's nerves warmed my heart, and it wasn't boring because this was a festival on another planet and some of the customs were talked about and that was cool. It was a nice story with a mostly happy end - I especially liked how Clara got her ring back, even though she had to lose the leaf.

I feel there have been small, self-contained type episodes which didn't pull that type of story off (I'm thinking especially of that episode with the little boy whose nightmares came to life or something like that, which left me feeling completely unsatisfied). But this, for me, wasn't one of them.

Is it just me or is there a lot of product placement all of a sudden? Before we got the occasional shot of someone's phone, now in one ep we have mentions of Facebook and Burger King and a glimpse of the Google logo, etc.

It was okay. The writing was a bit clunky. I feel like the show almost suffers from having a bigger budget then it used to, because they are concentrating too much on the cool things they can do and not enough on the characters and the stories.

After a rewatch this episode probably won't seem so strong to me, but after the last three episodes, it was just refreshing to see aliens and Clara having a backstory that isn't 'here's some black people, awesome now we're not racist' and the Doctor not acting like a bratty manchild.

I thought Mary was cute, the twist actually surprised me, the speech and the leaf were pretty awesome, and just seeing a bunch of cool aliens just because they exist rather than because they're happening to a bunch of humans was just... nice.

Clara herself is still pretty charming and I like her, but she doesn't have a lot of substance. I really want to enjoy her as a character, but so far she just feels like a plot device and that sucks. Hoping that later episodes improve on that.

Either way, this episode was good enjoy to keep me watching. This should have been what the show returned on imo.
