Foods you heard about in a book/movie and just had to try

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Curious how many other people have tried/wanted to try food because of something they read or watched.

I remember thinking salt pork sounded really delicious the entire time I was reading the Little House on the Prairie books. I was kind of disappointed when I actually got to try some and it was kind of gross.

I might be "dating" myself here, but Laverne on Laverne and Shirley drinking Pepsi and milk make me decide to try it (though I used Coke). Turns out, it's pretty much like drinking a Coke float. (-:

Butterbeer. I'm not in HP fandom but it always sounded so good to me when I read the books. I went to Universal Studios and they have carts everywhere selling it; it is exactly how I expected it to be :)

I've always wanted to try butter beer, but I've been too lazy to make any on my own. I kind of imagine it would taste like butterscotch for some reason. Yes/no?

Kinda yes but kinda no. It's really hard to explain. It's rich and creamy and buttery and kinda butterscotch-ish but kinda not. I've never made my own or even looked up recipes for it, so I can't really say how homemade would compare to what they serve at Universal Studios.

That might be a nice project for me for next weekend if the weather is nice :)

The grocery store near me has butterscotch soda that is clearly trying to market itself as Butterbeer as best it can without infringing on any trademarks. I'll have to try it!

A friend of mine made this! It was really rich and butterscotch-y if I remember correctly. I liked it. :D

Prune juice, Worf's favorite drink on Star Trek TNG.

I tried it because of this, but I kept drinking it even though I didn't like it at first because I heard it was healthy for you. Once I got used to it I loved it and still drink it pretty frequently.

I've always wanted to try klah and bubbly pies.
And hey, I'm an adult with a kitchen and like $6 in my bank account. Lets do this.

Jelly babies! Because of Doctor Who. They were sort of weird but also good.

If I had never been cajoled into reading Twilight, I might never have discovered mushroom ravioli, which is now one of my all-time favorite foods.

Japanese food. I know, it´s cliché, but most places only sell standar stuff like sushi. I wanted to try takoyaki, okonomiyaki and bentos. When I went to Japan I did. Everything was so tasty. :9

Cliche or not, those foods are delicious. Everyone should try takoyaki at least once. :3

My headache combined with the above thread made me read the subject as, "Foods you aspired to be".

I've tried cordials and scones thanks to the Redwall series (but I still haven't tried or tried to make a turnip n tater n beetroot pie omg I need that). Also, there was a period of time where I was really into shoujo anime and manga, so I was eating a lot of strawberry shortcake...

Dealing With Dragons got me into chocolate mousse :d

Key lime pie, from watching Enterprise. Don't regret it, that stuff is delicious.

There was one book I read as a kid, Jane of Lantern Hill, wherein she had this fantastical huge breakfast with all these delicious things in it and I had to have it. Although it was mostly normal breakfast foods, there were just so many of them.

I forget where I heard of it, but I only tried creme caramel due to hearing of it somewhere first. Mmmm.

Oh my God. Jane of Lantern Hill! That book made me want to Cook All The Foods too.

Was it the breakfast Aunt Irene fixed for Jane, her first day on P.E.I., but Jane couldn't eat a thing because she was so anxious?

That was it! The french toast and the orange juice and the grapefruit and the cereal drizzled with, I think it was some kind of syrup or honey? It just all sounded so good.

There was some random mystery I read years ago where it was the main characters' family tradition to put lemon juice and brown sugar on pancakes/waffles, and I thought it was actually really good.

I'm sure there are probably others, but I can't remember them right now.

Pasties, thanks to American Gods. I'm already enamored by piles of dough and you mix meat with it? Yummmmmmm...

I think it was also Little House on the Prairie that got me intrigued by hardtack and molasses (it's been a while, so maybe it was a similar book or story). Big sadface on those when someone brought in an apparently recipe-authentic batch to class.

The meat pie and anise balls from Roald Dahl's Danny, the Champion of the World (I've had anise balls now, which were delicious, but no meat pies yet that quite match Dahl's specific description... though I have ideas for making one).

The book wasn't specific on the dish, but the cartwheel-sized "dappled golden cake" from Taran Wanderer, where a farming family starts with a single egg and then everyone throws in something from the farm (flour, savory herbs, cheese, honeycomb). For that, a savory giant Dutch baby pancake I had once, while not cartwheel-sized, pretty much nailed the look and taste I'd always imagined, to the point of post-meal giggliness.

Quite a few homestyle Japanese dishes from manga and a couple from games, too. Okonomiyaki, spaghetti with roe, seafood doria. Also, always wanted at least one ridiculously put-together parfait with mochi. Happily, they've all been found, all delicious.

This isn't even touching fictional foods. Wonka, give me all your candy! (Swudge, snozzberries, even the square candies that look round...)

I've eaten most of the foods before, but every time I read one of Maud Hart Lovelace's Betsy-Tacy books, I end up wanting to eat something, usually corned beef hash with poached eggs.
