This happened to me too, and I got accused of being racist. :\ "You like them because they're white?" No, I thought they were black. "You like them because they 'sound more white'." No, I legit thought they were black

I'm not even white

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
didn't dre think eminem was black from his actual tapes or something? i don't think 'you must like them because they sound more white' counts as being racist when a lot of people seriously think they DON'T 'sound white'

I used to legitimately think that Adele was African-American, so I kind of understand where you're coming from? (Yes, African-American, I didn't know she was white & British for a while still, and even when I saw a picture of her, and she was white, I didn't know she was British.)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason I was convinced that she was 1) black and 2) from New Orleans. When a friend showed me a picture of her I thought she was trolling me.

I had the same snap judgement of "She's from New Orleans," for some reason, but I thought she was white. Voices are weird, haha.

I feel oddly relieved that I'm not the only one who thought so.

My family saw an interview of Adele on 60 minutes and my father said at least once, "Why is she talking like that?" when he heard her speaking voice. He still says "I can't believe she's British!" whenever she appears on something. A co-worker of mine thought Adele was African-American after first hearing her songs, too.

Wait, you know what's weirder? For over 20 years, my mother believed Rick Astley was black. RICK ASTLEY. Then my sister and I showed her that famous music video...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Your mother's not alone. For years, it was believed that Rick Astley was a front for a black singer.

Until I was 15 I thought George Thorogood was black. My sister thought Bob Seger was black until she was 20. o.O

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
George Thorogood and the Destroyers is just one of those names. Sound like they should be an old school funk band.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I've just got to say I'm loling at how "____ sound(s) white" can be used seriously in this discussion instead of being SJW fodder

That is refreshing!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Don't say their name, you'll summon them!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of reminds me of when this one comedian (on the radio) was making black jokes and got accused of being racist until his critics found out he WAS black. :o

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Kind of still wondering why it is that you end up favouring the white rappers, even if you don't know they're white initially.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've wondered this myself. I like a lot of hip hop but it's turned out to be by predominantly white artists. I don't know that they're white until I look up videos or something, but the consistency of the pattern makes me wonder.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Which white rappers do you like? I can only think of four off the top of my head lol

it's possibly an airplay thing. white rappers tend to be more mainstream

I know the feeling. I was surprised to find out the person who voiced Gloria in Happy Feet wasn't a black woman, but a white one. She's dead.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Steve Irwin voiced the walruses in that movie, too.

(He's also dead.)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Kudos to you OP!

I just got the checkboard theme.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Macklemore was black and was kind of excited that a black rapper was breaking rap conventions.

Finding out he was white was a bit of a letdown.
