By "cover," are you referring to a song that's a copy of another song or the picture that they put in the front of their album?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh good question! I just assumed it was the picture in the secret that was the picture/cover of the album.

Well, apparently it's a single, and it's a cover of "One Way or Another" by Blondir mashed up with "Teenage Kicks" by The Undertones. Considering that Blondie wrote the song about a stalker, I could maybe understand why you'd be offended if a pop band like One Direction covered it.

I'd be more offended at them having the gumption to take on a classic like "Teenage Kicks". Or "One Way or Another", for that matter, but especially Teenage Kicks.

That said, assuming you're correct in your analysis, it seems a little strange to get angry about this single in particular when pop music is so rife with songs about romance with questionable or wrong undertones.

I can't claim to know OP's mind, but maybe the OP had to deal with a stalker and that's the problem. Or maybe it is what you suggest it's all about the difference in artistic merit between the bands.

Teenage Kicks is hardly a classic, and the song choices were probably suggested by RND.

Oooh, that makes a lot more sense. The picture's so small, I couldn't see much detail.

Sorry, OP, but there will always be bad covers of songs you like. Remember when Miley Cyrus covered Every Rose Has Its Thorn?

That sounds so bad I'm gonna YouTube it as soon as I get home.

To me covers songs are only a problem when people only remember the cover and not the original. Like Gary Jules with his cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World." No one seems to remember the original. You go to youtube and you have people doing a cover of the cover song. (Inception, I know.) But no one does a cover of the Tears for Fears version. And it's shame because that a really good version of the song.

Gary Jules' version was in Donny Darko. That's probably what people know it from.

And many many tv episodes.

Or ... Good Charlotte(?)'s cover of Behind Blue Eyes or whoever it was that covered it.

Limp Bizkit did a cover of Behind Blue Eyes a few years ago (when I say a few I mean anywhere within the 2000's), could that be the one you're thinking of? :)

(Good Charlotte did a cover of Footloose a few years after, the later half of the 2000's.)

Clever monkey. I didn't even think of that!
