Ah, but there's a problem: you're assuming the accounts are fictional.

If the accounts are fictional, then there's no difference between reading a piece of fiction and hearing said accounts. If the accounts are real, then there's a world of difference. I can accept something in fiction, knowing that it has not or cannot or will not happen, that I might not be able to accept in real life.
