She's not saying she's having sex with the prostitute - just that her stories don't shock her.

Now how much difference do you think there is between reading a piece of fiction, and hearing a fictional account?

I didn't say that? I was saying that it's pretty silly to compare stories that happened (or not, depending on the truthiness of this particular prostitute) to a fictional story about fictional people. What's OP going to say - "That's a pretty impressive story, but I read this chapter about two characters from that show Supernatural, and..." Super badass reading skills, OP.

I know.

And I'm saying it's silly to draw a massive distinction between the two.

This was about their reaction, and the inability of the unusual or extreme sexual practices to shock them. There just isn't the mental divide between learning about them in a fictional vs nonfictional account you seem to think there is.

Drawing a distinction between fiction and reality is silly?

Just making sure I have this straight. Wow.

So two possible routes here.

Either the friend is telling the truth, or she's making it up. Except the OPs reaction will be the same either way. Keeping that in mind even accounting for the fictional stories adding a clear level of artifice the difference isn't as big as you're pretending here.

What?

OP's roommate isn't giving fictional accounts. She's giving non-fictional accounts. They are not made up. And frankly, there IS a big difference between being unimpressed by fictional stories and being jaded. I've watched enough slasher flicks to get bored with certain kinds of gratuitous violence. That doesn't mean I'm gonna be all "Oh, ho-hum, you're boring me" to a witness testimonial of a brutal murder.

You follow yet?

Sex isn't gratuitous violence. This is a stupid comparison.

You can't compare sex to violence, that's the most stupid comparison ever. Violence is shocking and horrible. Sex, just like eating, drinking, sleeping and breathing, is a pretty common function for most of humanity.

Ah, but there's a problem: you're assuming the accounts are fictional.

If the accounts are fictional, then there's no difference between reading a piece of fiction and hearing said accounts. If the accounts are real, then there's a world of difference. I can accept something in fiction, knowing that it has not or cannot or will not happen, that I might not be able to accept in real life.

A piece of fiction can also be based on personal experience.
