Yes, but the key difference between the two is that one is real and the other is, well, fiction.

I'd bet $5 you're the same nonny who's flipping their shit over an imaginary accusation that prostitutes lie, just up-thread.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Correct. We only tell the truth.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone lies. News at 11.

She's not saying she's having sex with the prostitute - just that her stories don't shock her.

Now how much difference do you think there is between reading a piece of fiction, and hearing a fictional account?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol you're trying so hard to start this want

I didn't say that? I was saying that it's pretty silly to compare stories that happened (or not, depending on the truthiness of this particular prostitute) to a fictional story about fictional people. What's OP going to say - "That's a pretty impressive story, but I read this chapter about two characters from that show Supernatural, and..." Super badass reading skills, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I know.

And I'm saying it's silly to draw a massive distinction between the two.

This was about their reaction, and the inability of the unusual or extreme sexual practices to shock them. There just isn't the mental divide between learning about them in a fictional vs nonfictional account you seem to think there is.

She's not saying she's having sex with the prostitute

What?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
OP's roommate isn't giving fictional accounts. She's giving non-fictional accounts. They are not made up. And frankly, there IS a big difference between being unimpressed by fictional stories and being jaded. I've watched enough slasher flicks to get bored with certain kinds of gratuitous violence. That doesn't mean I'm gonna be all "Oh, ho-hum, you're boring me" to a witness testimonial of a brutal murder.

You follow yet?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Read what I actually wrote plz

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Sex isn't gratuitous violence. This is a stupid comparison.

You can't compare sex to violence, that's the most stupid comparison ever. Violence is shocking and horrible. Sex, just like eating, drinking, sleeping and breathing, is a pretty common function for most of humanity.

Ah, but there's a problem: you're assuming the accounts are fictional.

If the accounts are fictional, then there's no difference between reading a piece of fiction and hearing said accounts. If the accounts are real, then there's a world of difference. I can accept something in fiction, knowing that it has not or cannot or will not happen, that I might not be able to accept in real life.

But OP isn't shocked because she already knows people are into really kinky shit in fiction - a why would she be shocked that people actually go through with it? Or are you responding to the smug tone of the secret, in which case I kind of agree with you :)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I was thinking... Most kinky fic gets written because there's somebody out there who's into it...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
But porn being based on real desires, I'm not going to be that surprised if someone shelling out for sex has an odd kink that I've already seen expressed in fanfic. It's probably the same for OP.
