[Lost In Austen]

I understand you OP. I have the same problem. For me this is basically a Mary Sue series. :/

Eh, I didn't think it was that bad. Just light-hearted fluff. It's no Lizzie Bennet Diaries but I can enjoy silly stuff like that every now and then.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was one of those kind of light enjoyable romps you watch on TV when there's nothing better on. Easy to avoid if you don't like it tbh. OP sounds like they're having a moment of 'weh people shouldn't like stuff I don't like'.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-10 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
IKR? I had to stop this abomination after watching it a few minutes.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And the lead is suuuuuuuuch a terrible actress. I tolerate a lot from terrible actors, but ahhhhhhhhhhh I was wincing.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-10 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not an Austen fan, it's just not my thing, but I really enjoyed this series when it was on TV (was it really as long ago as 2008?!) because I have a girlcrush on Jemima Rooper.

lol, I came here to say this exact thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-10 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, you pretty much nailed it as to why I heard about this and thought... no, thanks. If I want wish fulfillment stories with annoying Mary Sues, that's what crappy fanfic is for.

Eh, I liked it as a period romance version of your usual mindless, popcorn-munching, explosions-in-your-face action flick. It's not "good," but can end up being rather entertaining nonetheless.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-10 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved the concept of this series, but the execution sucked. It was like some producer went, "I have a genius idea!!! A Darcy fangirl somehow gets IN P&P!!!" and no one told them that this is an ancient tradition that has been done before, generally badly but sometimes brilliantly.

I know this series was a Mary Sue wish fulfillment, but I dug it anyways. It was cute and I love Jemima Rooper.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-10 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a Mary Sue self insert fanfiction that got made into a screenplay and actually made. Obviously, whoever produced it has no inkling that fandom exists, or they'd have taken one look at it and died laughing.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
No, it is mocking those Mary Sue fics, and the Mary Sue fans. The reason you hate it is it is killing your fixfics because now you know how terrible they really are.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
...Mocking. Right. There's satire, and then there's bad satire. I'm not going to sit here and argue about my fandom activities with you, and I had to look up what a fix fic even was before feeling capable of responding to this (hint: it's not my thing), and then I had to laugh at what some anonymous moron decided was my thing based on my opinion on a miniseries based on one of my favorite books.

What, I can't have an opinion that disagrees with you? You shouldn't assume that someone who disagrees with a thing automatically doesn't understand it. That's asinine.

I thought it was cute. Mary Sue, sure, but cute.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well of course you dislike this OP, it is a deconstruction of every fan. All that stuff you hate, you hate it because that is YOU on the screen there. Every self-insert muse you ever had about how YOU would handle the story if you were in it. It shines a light on the underbelly of fandom, and says "you suck and here is why".

Every fanthing's "waaaaaaaah" is validation of its mission.

I just wish someone would do the same for all the military nerds too. They've hit the fluffy bunny romantics, time to hit the "I've played call of duty and now I'm a perfect soldier hoooraaa" demographic too.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, OP! That movie is horrible. Lizzy and Darcy forever!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
People are still clogging your dash with stuff about a show that ended nearly five years ago?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
srsly follow better people asap. if you're lurking in fandom tags and complaining about the shit that turns up there i have no sympathy for you.

FINALLY. I watched the first episode, because I'd heard a lot of good things about it, and I was horrified. The heroine is the definition of a Mary Sue.

What really annoyed me is that she starts out bitching about lesser fans who don't know anything about Jane Austen as a writer or about the Regency period and are only in it for Colin Firth's wet shirt, and then she turns out to be exactly the same way. She "charmingly" makes "adorable" mistakes that a) would have had her ostracised and b) would have been easily avoidable for anyone who's ever put 10 minutes of thought into the realities the Bennet sisters live in.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that was the point?
