FINALLY. I watched the first episode, because I'd heard a lot of good things about it, and I was horrified. The heroine is the definition of a Mary Sue.

What really annoyed me is that she starts out bitching about lesser fans who don't know anything about Jane Austen as a writer or about the Regency period and are only in it for Colin Firth's wet shirt, and then she turns out to be exactly the same way. She "charmingly" makes "adorable" mistakes that a) would have had her ostracised and b) would have been easily avoidable for anyone who's ever put 10 minutes of thought into the realities the Bennet sisters live in.

I thought that was the point?

It's funny how literally no one sold the show as such to me. From what fans of the show and professionally written reviews said, I was supposed to like that vapid idiot.

Also, the way things keeps going her way seems to suggest she's more of a Mary Sue than a warning example. At least with people like Basil Fawlty, their sense of self importance is undercut by how often they fail. It's an interesting trope, for sure, but it's hard to do right. Even if that was the point of Lost in Austen, I'd still call it a failure.
