Why do you need to be attracted to a character in order to enjoy them?

+1

What is it with fandom and forming opinions of characters based entirely on whether or not they are pretty enough?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Or the converse, acting as if because they like the character they must be objectively stunning and irresistible, followed by 1000 fanfics about them being sold into sex slavery and fighting of the hordes of people who fall instantly in love with them.

Ugh.

That's what I'm wondering too. There's nothing wrong with enjoying watching attractive people, but when you start complaining that actors don't live up to your beauty standards enough, you come across as entitled.

Ditto. The character doesn't have to be pretty if you want to like them.

I don't know. I got the impression that the OP couldn't enjoy the character because they contained a physical quality she found disturbing.

I can easily love a character I don't find physically attractive, but if a character has really bad teeth I'm immediately put off. It doesn't matter how good of an actor/actress they are. I just become so unsettled by their teeth that everything else becomes a distraction.

It's hard to like a character when you just looking at them makes you cringe.

What is your definition of bad teeth? Because I have never seen anybody on TV with bad teeth that weren't deliberate.
