That soooo much better!

They're lions. African lions. There should be no question about what race their human counterparts are. I'm so confused by fandom sometimes.

you know that there are a lot more races in africa besides just black right?

Ya don't say? Gosh, I had no idea!

Seriously though, I'm well aware of how large the continent is. The African lion is native to Western Africa. The populations of Western African consist predominantly of dark-skinned people. Therefore, if you're going to draw the lions in human form, it stands to reason that you'd make your character design reflect the look of people who are actually from that area.

This isn't just an 'OMG THEYRE FROM AFRICA!! WHY DIDNT YOU DRAW THEM BLACK!?!?!' reaction; I would have the same reaction if someone anthropomorphized pandas and drew them as black people dressed in Chinese-inspired garb. I would still look at them like 'how in the world does that make ANY sense??'

Yeah, seriously.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so does that mean pandas must be humanized as only Asian and sand cats as only Middle Eastern?

In my opinion, if you're gonna anthropomorphized an animal that's only found in a very specific region of the world, the human image should correspond to the look of the people found in that region.

Of course, that's my opinion. The fact that this secret exists shows that people don't have to agree with it.

The thing is, though, that humans are animals. Making a humanized version of a lion is no different than making a ferretized version of one. We're apes, they're cats, have at it I say.

Have at it, indeed. I'm not gonna have a cow over it. It just doesn't make sense to me, like when people use strawberry jam for PB&Js. But it's still what they wanna do. I'm not gonna burn them at the stake for it LOL

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
The artist who created that image isn't even white but Japanese, so, I'm going to take a guess they're anime "white", aka, not white.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
There's something to be said for it also being a movie that very definitely takes place in a specific region as well, with a specific cultural influence behind a lot of the aesthetic.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing you're either white or have been brainwashed by "colorblind casting" (i.e, we're gonna claim white people do it better even though all the characters in the book/original production were poc).

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
...But...but aren't lions white skinned?
wldcatsprstr_14: (Default)

[personal profile] wldcatsprstr_14 2013-04-12 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
LOL I'm not sure why but this comment made me giggle. In a totally random way. That's really all I got, anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
WHAT. lol They are LIONS, and finish there. Their "human counterpart" is nothing, because they are lions. If you want to make them look human versions of the original, use the same color scheme. Golden skin, reddish-gold manes, or black, depending on the lion. Jesus, why do animals have designated human races, I can't even

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Pugletto's art is pretty, but the characters are completely unrecognizable because the color scheme and overall design is so far from the original animal characters.
