Dude, what fans do you associate with and why do you take what they say at face value? I don't care what rationalizations people come up with when they torture their favorite characters, 95% of the time, the main reason is that they like seeing them in pain. End of story. Not always, of course, but I think 95% of the time is a pretty good estimate. You're not remotely abnormal.

I think 95% is waaaay too high. I like h/c and it has nothing to do with seeing favorite character in pain or tortured. I know everyone has their own reasons, but I really don't think I'm that much in the minority.

Well, I could be wrong, never did a scientific study or anything, but I've delved into the fandoms of a ridiculously wide range of different genres and mediums, and writer/reader motivations have always been pretty consistent. Mind you, not saying that people don't have other reasons as well, but liking seeing characters get hurt is a really, really frequent component.

There may also be a difference in reader/writership between whump and h/c, given that the two types of stories are aiming for different end goals.

I fit into your 95% non-scientific study. I have no idea WHY I like seeing my favorites characters in pain - because they're the center of attention? because people will look after them? not sure - but I do like it. It's just one of my kinks!
