Er, there's nothing wrong with you. Being attracted to the pain and suffering of people you're attracted to isn't weird/wrong (unless you ACTUALLY hurt people IRL in order to experience it). I'd always thought it was one of the most common/widely publicised kinks, especially in fandom places.

IDGAF about the 'slow healing process' either (that's why I like Doctor!whump, given that he's always back on his feet in pretty short order), although I sometimes like it for the relationships with other characters.

That's Gridlock, I think. He's being sad about Gallifrey.

Doesn't this just make you a (sexual?) sadist? Not really anything wrong with that, just gotta find a willing partner and you're good to go!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Can't speak for OP, but as someone with the same kink, I have no desire to hurt people. Ever. I just get really hyped up by seeing people in pain. In fiction, particularly when it's strong, yummy men, this translates toward the sex side of things, sure, but I'm an EMT irl, and when I see people hurting, I use the adrenalin rush to help them.

Dude, what fans do you associate with and why do you take what they say at face value? I don't care what rationalizations people come up with when they torture their favorite characters, 95% of the time, the main reason is that they like seeing them in pain. End of story. Not always, of course, but I think 95% of the time is a pretty good estimate. You're not remotely abnormal.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think 95% is waaaay too high. I like h/c and it has nothing to do with seeing favorite character in pain or tortured. I know everyone has their own reasons, but I really don't think I'm that much in the minority.

Well, I could be wrong, never did a scientific study or anything, but I've delved into the fandoms of a ridiculously wide range of different genres and mediums, and writer/reader motivations have always been pretty consistent. Mind you, not saying that people don't have other reasons as well, but liking seeing characters get hurt is a really, really frequent component.

There may also be a difference in reader/writership between whump and h/c, given that the two types of stories are aiming for different end goals.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I fit into your 95% non-scientific study. I have no idea WHY I like seeing my favorites characters in pain - because they're the center of attention? because people will look after them? not sure - but I do like it. It's just one of my kinks!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Mmm, the delicious pain of fictional people.

HOW DO YOU FACE

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
HNNNNNGGG that picture. How does David Tennant's face work, it's like he has perfect control over every single muscle of every single feature or something. That's some serious thousand-yard-stare going on there.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
tbh, I side-eye people who get sexual enjoyment out of seeing characters in pain. I don't see how that's supposed to be just totally fine -- would a guy who watched torture porn be considered "fine"? I think it's just that they've build up a sense of "okayness" through the internet, where they think fapping to characters' pain is A-okay just because everyone else is doing it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Agree. And generally, I'm not one to judge kinks. But I don't GET it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for anyone else who's into whump, but when I'm get off to my favorite characters in pain, I'm imagining the experience from their perspective.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Same here.

+1

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Go ahead and side-eye - but if you tell me your kinks, I'm sure I can find some that I can side-eye myself. Whatever it is you're fapping to, someone will find it morally degenerate.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
would a guy who watched torture porn be considered "fine"?

Lawl.

Guys who watch torture porn are men watching women get hurt. Fans who read whump or fap to fictional pain scenes are women watching men get hurt. When it's men getting hurt, it's okay.

A+ pic choice OP. That picture makes me want to see some villain pick the Doctor up by the collar, throw him flat on his back on the floor, wrap their hands around that beautiful bare neck, and beat/torture/rape him until he's too drained to scream in agony anymore and just lies there with that perfect expression on his face.

I don't think there's anything wrong with me. I mean, I haven't noticed anything outside of fanfic, and neither have my friends or family. I'm pretty sure more people feel the same than admit it.

I think Ten's very being is a flashing neon sign that says "pick me up by the collar, throw me flat on my back on the floor, hold me down by my hair, and shag me until I can't walk straight." Combine that with how goddamn exquisitely he suffers and you get into some really fucked-up whump fantasies really, really quickly.

I mean, damn, he just radiates it. It's like his superpower is to make women viscerally wish they could grow a dick for the specific purpose of pinning him against the nearest hard surface and fucking him into next week.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
*spontaneously combusts into a wisp of smoke and reforms*

Yes.

Of course, I'd then desperately want to see Donna burst in and beat the shit out of the villain with a bag of golf clubs. BUT that would be the cherry, not the ice cream.

I mean, seriously, most people ARE kidding themselves when they insist that all those other reasons are the only reasons. You only need to skim the person's fic to see what their motive is, the female-gaze* is almost always pretty damned easy to pick out, and the ones that truly are written solely for the comfort aspect or whatever are also damned easy to pick out.

I say female gaze because it IS almost always happening to male characters, by female authors.

This so much! OP, you've described my life!! So glad to find out I'm not the only one, but I don't think there's anything wrong with us. Personally, part of the reason I like whump so much is getting to watch the usually secondary characters pick up the slack while the protagonist is out of commission.

You probably have some idea of exactly how excited I am by that phrase. Out of commission... *shiver* :)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh God, yes. I know that feeling, especially the thinking I must be really fucked up. It's only for a few specific characters with me, but watching them suffer is just... really gratifying, idek.

And Ten is definitely one of them for me. Very fitting that this is a pic from season 3, because that's when I figured it out. The Shakespeare episode, when one of his hearts has been stopped and he's rolling around on the floor shouting and begging Martha to hit him really hard........ yes. Let's not even get started on "42."

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. I like to imagine myself in the role of whoever helps patch the victim up (only "helps", it's more fun when they have some autonomy and can finish the job themselves) precisely because I wouldn't have a clue where to start in real life, but I do love the whump for its own sake as well.
