I haven't read the books, but in the series she seems to have fucked up her children pretty badly esp looking at Jeoffrey. Ruthless really doesn't work for her.

She's worse in the books. They've toned her down for the show.

Wow that's.... hard to believe. I don't think I could handle any more Cersei than is on the show, I get frustrated very easily.

But I guess it helps my point... sort of?

Yeah. For starters, in the books Cersei was the one who engineered the slaughter of the bastards, not Joffrey.

LOL WHAT in the show they have Joff doing it??? Dumb on so many levels... holy shit.

Wait, I think in the show it was clearly Cersei who caused that. Joff in the show sticks to the 'I'm not a bastard child of incest' mentality almost as much as he does in the books, he just doesn't talk about Robert so much. He questions his mother once but at least at the point where they kill the bastard children, he definitely doesn't know the rumors about him. Which makes a difference because the only motivation he would have to kill the bastards would be if he thought there was a serious threat to his claim as the legitimate first heir of Robert's marriage to Cersei.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Joffrey is the way he is partially because of Robert: Robert never questioned the boy's parentage, but it is made clear throughout the books that he was deeply disappointed with his 'son' and felt little affection for Joffrey. By contrast, it is also implied in the book that Joffrey craved Robert's respect and approval, and many of his acts were done in an effort to live up to his 'father's' standards. (from the asoiaf wiki)

So while I don't doubt that Cersei also had a hand in turning him into a little monster, Robert can't be held blameless. Joffrey was the one who hired the assassin to kill Bran because he heard Robert say it would be more merciful for the boy to die rather than live a cripple. I'm assuming Joffrey thought that killing Bran would make Robert proud of him.

That wasn't what I was trying to say, to be honest I think with the whole trifecta of horrible parents he never had a chance to become a decent person ever. I don't think that takes away from my point anyway.

It's also hinted at that Robert was physically abusive to his children, but Cersei was adamantly against that and put a stop to it at some point. Either way there was definitely overt, vocalized disappointment toward Joffrey (think about the scene after Arya fights Joffrey, "you let that little girl disarm you?" etc) and it doesn't appear there was any positive interaction between them, even though Joffrey seems to have admired Robert a great deal and really wanted to impress him (like the implications of your example with Bran). But in personality Joffrey is much more like Cersei, and she enables that with her treatment of him. I do think in part Robert's reaction to Joffrey was because of his similarities to Cersei, who he seemed to almost hate. Not that it makes things better but there is definitely a fucked up situation for Joffrey. Still, neither Robert nor Cersei seem to be anywhere near as cruel as Joffrey is, nor to take such obvious pleasure in the suffering/mutilation/murder/humiliation/abuse of others. Cersei has motivational factors for her behavior, as horrible as they are, she doesn't act just out of joy of hurting others. Joffrey does and that seems unique to him. His personality defects and taste for violence made him a disaster waiting to happen, when combined with that horrible family environment.

Shitty parenting aside, I suspect Joffrey was just naturally sociopathic anyway. His siblings aren't even half as fucked up as he is, even considering the different levels of attention paid to them.

That's true (I guess... I don't think we ever really get to know the other kids in the series?). But I also think that her ruthlessness is putting them in danger is what I meant. Probably worded that too flippant.

Tommen and Myrcella both seem to be decent little kids.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, all the "good" characters seem to like Tommen and Myrcella and they really haven't done anything to suggest they have trouble brewing there... they seem like sweet, normal kids. Actually, Cersei herself comments on Joffrey's difference to his siblings at some point, maybe when she's talking to Tyrion or Jaime, about how the Targaryens had wed brother to sister, and there was no telling whether they would be good rulers, or mad and cruel. She admits that Joff has a cruel streak and she can't control him, but seems to believe it's based in the incest rather than any external factors like his father's abusive tendencies and her own crazy ruthless furthering of her (and his) self-interest.
