i'm all for people doing whatever makes them happy, however strange it might seem. be a dragon/snapewife/mersnape -- go to town!
i can't abide people co-opting actual, real life struggle against oppression, though

Very probably you're right, there are arseholes in every group.
But, and it seems like I spend more time than I'd like arguing this point, You can't judge and dismiss a whole group of people based on the action of the worst membes of the group.
People are being treat like shit for very little reason. You see the problem with that? Maybe you don't, Maybe it seems rational for you to support that shitty behaviour, but there's never been a double standard in history that didn't have masses of justifications that seem rational to the people benefiting from it. See what I mean?
