The world really could benefit for a bit more 'live and let live'
I don't buy into it or anything, but the fact is 'Otherkins' are not inherently being arseholes by their belief / wish / fantasy / perception of the world and their place in it / etc.

People calling them stupid, delusional, and just generally being pricks and taking the piss out of them ARE being arseholes.

Most the people in this thread are being poorer examples of human beings than the people who don't believe they really are human beings. Sad business.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
look, i don't give a shit if you wanna pretend you are a wolf or what-fucking-ever. but most otherkin and folks like them try to co-opt the VERY REAL discrimination and suffering POC, LGBT, and other minority people face. people who do that can shiv themselves up the dick. pretending to be an otterdragon on the internet isn't the same shit as being trans* in real life, etc etc. jesus fuck.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
agree 100%

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Very probably you're right, there are arseholes in every group.

But, and it seems like I spend more time than I'd like arguing this point, You can't judge and dismiss a whole group of people based on the action of the worst membes of the group.

People are being treat like shit for very little reason. You see the problem with that? Maybe you don't, Maybe it seems rational for you to support that shitty behaviour, but there's never been a double standard in history that didn't have masses of justifications that seem rational to the people benefiting from it. See what I mean?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
you sound like the person who goes into a thread on rape where victims are sharing their mutual feelings of hating men with, "come on guys, not all men are bad! There's no need to judge the entire group on the actions of a few!"

This. Believing that that you're actually Naruto, Princess Peach, a piece of cold pizza, and/or Justin Bieber isn't the same as facing real-life discrimination. Worse, I think some of these people do have real mental/emotional problems that she be treated right away (not "respected").

...and I don't know of any who claim it is.

I do, however, know quite a few who have concluded - quite reasonably, given the reactions in this thread - that if they were to tell people they might well face real-life discrimination, though not systematic oppression.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So what about the 'kin who ARE PoC, LGBT, disabled, neuroatypical (I mean besides the 'kin thing), etc, etc?

Of the 'kin I know personally (I myself am not one), let's see... there's my boyfriend, who's Anglo-Indian and autistic, there's my sister's friend, who's a black transwoman, there's a friend I have in the next town who's disabled and a lesbian... I'm just curious, because it seems to be assumed by the majority of detractors that all 'kin are white, cishet, ablebodied, and generally privileged in all ways in their general lives.

And all of those people have some real struggles.

Being Fox McCloud or Yuffie isn't one of them.

This thread really the holier than thou attitude.
Oh wait... it didn't.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not claiming to be holier than anyone. I just suggest people (Myself included) that people try, wherever possible, not to be a dick.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

and i agree
i'd never be a dick to an otherkin/otakukin/astral-plane-wives/husbands who're just minding their own business & having fun

i do think they have no business equating their pretendy-fun-time with real issues like homophobia or racism though, so i do feel a bit pissed off about the end of this secret.

'poorer examples of human beings'

because some of us find it a bit offensive that otherkin try and equate themselves with groups legitimately discriminated against, like LGBT, PoC, or ethnic minorities?

i'm all for people doing whatever makes them happy, however strange it might seem. be a dragon/snapewife/mersnape -- go to town!

i can't abide people co-opting actual, real life struggle against oppression, though

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm not sure the way to treat somone who feels they're being bullied more then they actually are IRL is to bully them online.

Also Ctrl: C/V from above:

telling them to get real about otherkin vs LGBT issues is not bullying

I'm all for live and let live but stupid is still stupid. This person thinks she/he is a WEREWOLF. That is stupid. Full stop.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Originally it was believed that men could transform into werewolves by selling their souls to Satan and getting a special wolf hide that would grant them the ability to turn.
Anyone who believes they are a modern horror movie/romantic YA novel werewolf are even dumber than stupid because it isn't even the original myth anymore.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well, technically, no. There are dozens of Human/Animal transformation myths across all different cultures coming from all different roots, so there is no specific 'Original' version.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Says who? Is it really your place to dismiss what a person believes or like to believe to define their place in the world? Aslong as they aren't hurting anyone a person should be free to find whatever happyness they can.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-12 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Both people are free to be equally judgmental of whomever they like.

I think the problem is though, beyond the appropriating and trying to co-opt thing... there are members who fall into this community who need very genuine help. Eh, not to say that every teenager who once pretended to be a cat online needs to be dragged to a shrink, but I've seen a ton of people that fall in the otherkin community that do need professional help. And these kinda communities often have such an isolating nature that they keep people from getting that help.

(It's not just otherkins though. this kinda happens a lot with internet sub communities, because lets face it, the loudest members are often the craziest, most of them aren't exactly educated properly on mental health and they often go for the quick and easy solution which don't tend to be the greatest for people in the long run.)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
All valid points, with a few counter points:

If you re-read the thread, how many people seem to genuinly want to help somone, and how many people are just being... mean for the sake of feeling superior to somone?

Also, every group has people in it who are in need of help, people turn to religion in times of tradgedy and it could be considered that there are better ways to deal with it (I'm thinking of a specific person in my life, but its not a unique story so we can keep it general), but the thing is it's not my place to decide that for the person, the only person who get's to decide what the best way for them to cope / live / find happines is.

If somone finds happiness in a community it's up to them to decide if it's healthy for them, and it's no-ones right to belittle and insult them for it. With the proviso that they don't hurt anyone else.

I'm 'kin. I have professional help, primarily for depression. And when I mentioned being 'kin, I was told that as long as it - as opposed to things partially rooted in it - wasn't preventing me from functioning, it didn't need any fixing. Maybe we should leave psychological/psychiatric assessment to the professionals.
