Yeah seriously I love this art, I cannot with the white TLK shit.

Lol. They are literally lions. They don't represent black Africans. The story itself is Shakespeare, so having them white is not racist. This is blatantly stupid race wank.

Can we not with the IT'S SHAKESPEARE THEREFORE EUROPEAN shit? It has some similar basic themes to Hamlet, but it's about talking lions in Africa. Hamlet has absolutely no bearing on this discussion. It's not Hamlet. Come on.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
lol Yeah, because the only animal that matters are humans. I love how people lose their shit of lions being drawn as apes, which humans are. I guess people forget we're animals, too?

What does any of that have to do with my comment?

But that's the point. Saying The Lion King characters MUST BE BLACK is ridiculously stupid, because there is nothing inherent about the story to black Africans. Sure, maybe... the music is African inspired? But they are lions. repeat for clarification: THEY ARE LIONS. They are not humans. The story is not an African folk tale, it's Shakespeare. It's weird to me how far people are reading into the fact that lions live in Africa, therefore there human form must reflect the people native to that place. give me a fucking break.

Uh... no. The point is that The Lion King is not Hamlet, it does take place with completely different characters in a very specific place, and the fact that the movie has an incredibly loose basis in Shakespeare has fuckall to do with what the lions would look like if they were people. What the hell kind of logic is that?
