This was a lot to read, but I think I understand where you're getting at.

You see, a year or two ago, I would've been in your position. I was and am still quite boy-crazy. Men are so fucking hot, I can't stand it, yadda-yadda. But this is just about that. There are so many times I've read stories where the prose waxes poetry about a male character's looks and how the protagonist is head over heels in love. And it gets irritating, because there's very little said in the way of personality, motivation, and the entire plot in those stories, generally. But I feel like I'm going off track here, so the point I'm trying to make is that attractive men aren't the end all for enjoyment- trust me, I spent a lot of time on tumblr to now be rolling my eyes at posts full of generic attractive guys (who are almost always white ffs, but that's a vicious rant for another time).

Thing is, I can understand now and relate to where quite a few of these other people are coming from when they say that there isn't even an iota of care and attention being paid to female characters and there isn't many still that aren't written well enough to be satisfactory, since their characterisation is often defined by their relationships with the male characters. The thing is, you don't need to be attracted to women in order to celebrate them as characters in their stories, and that's what a lot of these people are trying to get at.

Still, by all means, indulge in male characters (because as someone who relates to gay male characters the most, I do that quite a lot too), but if I were you, I'd make some attempt at appreciating female characters more.
